GOFFSTOWN - The Goffstown High School field hockey team had a handful of quality scoring chances in the second half Friday against Bow, but an unlucky bounce or a nice save by Falcons goalie Madeline Soucy stymied the Grizzlies for more than 29 minutes.

With under a minute to play, Goffstown finally got the break it needed.

Alyssa Gabbidon sent the ball into the circle, trying to get it across to Bethany Dubreuil on the far side of the goal, but Soucy got a piece of it. The rebound came right out in front, where Grace Taylor was waiting to knock the ball in with 41.2 seconds left, and the Grizzlies were able to hold off the Falcons' final charge for a 2-1 win in the Division II regular-season finale for both teams.

Both teams are in the postseason and will likely have a rematch in the D2 preliminary round in Goffstown on Thursday.

"The girls played well, specifically the second half," Goffstown coach Jess Brown said. "The intensity, the play was far smarter, the passes were to people or to strong space. I thought we were creating more dangerous opportunities in the circle.

"I also thought we did a nice job defensively, doing a better job dropping and recovering behind a player who was putting pressure on the ball."

Taylor had both goals for the Grizzlies (8-6), as her first goal of the game came off a penalty corner with 17:12 left in the first half and tied the game 1-1\. Sarah Mattison made three saves for Goffstown and the Grizzlies had nine corners.

Alex Larrabee gave Bow (5-8-1) the lead just over eight minutes into the game and Barrie Guertin had an assist, while Soucy and Anna Tsouros combined for nine saves. The Falcons, who lost five one-goal games during the regular season, had three corners, all in the second half.

"They played great," Bow coach Rebecca Cleary said. "This has been a wonderful season for them. They did a great job (Friday). We always want to score first. That’s what we say in our huddle, score first and score often.

"They talked about making shorter passes, being quick on the ball. We felt good and the girls felt they were playing well. We wanted to keep up the pressure."

Goffstown put more of that pressure on in the early part of the game, getting its first corner about seven minutes in, but Bow was able to clear the circle and break out the other way. With the Grizzlies scrambling to get back, Larrabee was able to make it a 1-0 game with 21:55 left in the first half.

"That has been an Achille’s heel for us a little bit," Brown said. "We can get caught where we just don’t pick the opponent up fast enough. By the time we’re making those decisions, they’re getting a shot off. We weren’t communicating well so we just allowed an opportunity in the circle."

Taylor answered on Goffstown's second corner of the game, tying the game at 1 with 17:12 remaining in the half. Play remained in the midfield for most of the half until the Grizzlies had some chances late, including three straight corners with no time left on the clock, but it was still 1-1 going into halftime.

"Mentally, it was good," Brown said of the feeling at halftime. "When you feel like you’re controlling a game and then you’re down 1-0, it’s always tough. They kept their heads and continued to play their game. If we kept up what we’re doing, sooner or later, we should be able to get on the scoreboard."

The Grizzlies had the better of the chances early in the second half, but Soucy made a couple of saves and Goffstown just missed on a few others. Bow responded with a rush of its own midway through the half, but couldn't get a shot off on back-to-back corners.

Mattison then came up with a pair of stops to keep the game tied, and with just under 10 minutes to play, Dubreuil had a shot go just wide.

Each team had a corner in the final seven minutes, but couldn't capitalize. Goffstown was able to keep the ball in Bow's end after its opportunity, setting up Taylor's game-winning goal.

"I thought we were creating throughout the second half, we just weren’t finishing," Brown said. "It was nice to be able to, even if it was a little scrappy, to get one in the back of the net."
