GOFFSTOWN - Sometimes everything goes according to the game plan.

And sometimes, you just have to find a way to grind out a win.

The Goffstown High School field hockey team did the later Monday, getting a goal late in the third quarter and making it stand up in a 1-0 win over Hollis Brookline in a Division II contest.

Makayla Strickulis sent the ball into the circle from the right side of the field and its found its way across to Avery Brisiel, who was waiting alone to knock it into the goal with 50.2 seconds remaining the third quarter.

Goffstown (4-3) kept the pressure on the Cavaliers (3-4) over the final 15 minutes, getting four penalty corners in the final eight minutes, and kept HB from getting anything going on offense over that time.

"It was a gritty win," Grizzlies coach Jess Brown said. "I thought we created, we got corners, we had some good movement, we kept coming back but not necessarily getting in full rhythm. A gritty win is still a win.

"Even thought sometimes we know what we want to do to change it, we have to keep chipping away and they did that. We played solid defense, we did a good job keeping the ball above our 25 for the majority of the game."

HB had a chance to tie the game early in the fourth, when a long hit sent the ball into Goffstown's end, but well past players for either team. It rolled into the circle and goalie Maddie Brown came out to play it as an HB player chased after it, but although she missed the ball, it rolled out of bounds.

Moments later, the Cavs got a corner, but Brown came up with one of her two saves, as she and Molly Braica combined on the shutout.

For HB, it was the second 1-0 loss in a row, after the Cavs lost to Kingswood last Friday in overtime, and the team's fourth one-goal game of the season.

"Mentally, we came out a little rough, and that showed in our slow play," HB coach Allie Buschmann said. "We’ve become a turf team and we have a habit to fall into those tendencies when we get on grass. We’ve got to be able to react. We played a slow game, so we need to step that up."

Long stretches of the first three quarters were played in the middle of the field, with neither team able to do much with the ball inside the other team's 25\. HB appeared to catch a break in the first quarter, when goalie Rae Kline (nine saves) made a stop but looked like she covered the ball for a moment.

"She made a great save," Buschmann said. "She went and I think she covered it, but was smart enough to get it out of her pads quickly. One of her teammates took it off her pads and fired it out of the circle. You couldn’t have asked for a better defensive play than having your goalie save it and her teammate take it right off her pad."

Goffstown got a corner early in the second quarter, but couldn't get a shot off, while HB had one late in the half, but Brown turned away a shot by the Cavs.

The Grizzlies had the only corner of the third, but a shot by Strickulis went wide before they finally broke through late in the quarter.

"(Brisiel) held her post," Brown said. "We had had a few that had made their way across and we lost somebody there. She did a nice job of holding that space to get that touch."
