GOFFSTOWN - With a brand new state-of-the-art turf field and lights, the Goffstown High School field hockey team kicked off its season in style but came away with a scoreless tie against Division II rival Derryfield.

The Grizzlies faced off against the Cougars on a rainy Friday night in their first game of the year and were sent into overtime.

Goffstown lost to Derryfield last year in the playoffs, 1-0, and came into this game with a vengeance.

From the start of quarter one, both Goffstown and Derryfield struggled to score. Each squad had several opportunities, whether that be multiple corners or penalties that they could take advantage of, but neither team could not make a final push toward the net. After the first 15 minutes, the game remained scoreless.

Derryfield had numerous chances to one-up Goffstown during the first quarter with corners, but despite the Cougars' aggressive drive hits, nothing made it past Molly Braica, Goffstown’s goalkeeper.

Goffstown from the start utilized its speed and breakaway strategy. The Grizzlies were in scoring range for almost the entire second quarter, but kept getting stopped by Derryfield’s strong backend and goalie, Jess Avalon, who had a stellar performance all night.

Heading into halftime, the score still remained 0-0\.

Goffstown came back after the half with four corners in a row, but Derryfield’s defense remained unfrazzled and denied Goffstown once again. Derryfield’s offense struggled in the third quarter, and the Cougars remained mostly on the defensive for the entirety of the quarter.

“We want to make sure we can execute them well and we are also hoping to score off of them,” said Goffstown coach Jess Brown when asked about scoring on corners.

The pressure was on during the last quarter, as the score still remained 0-0 for both teams. Derryfield felt this pressure and started to pick up some more momentum during the fourth, but Goffstown kept on denying the Cougars. After 60 minutes of regulation and still no points on the board, the game went into overtime.

The 10-minute overtime period was once again dominated by Goffstown corners, but Derryfield’s Avalon continued to stand tall, with her impressive blocks on net. At the end of overtime, the score still remained 0-0, which resulted in a tie for both Derryfield and Goffstown.

“I think it was a really strong way to start the season,” Brown said. “Obviously we would have loved to pull out the win, but I think with the jitters that go into a first game, with the new turf and lights, I think Derryfield was strong. For us to be able to walk away with a tie is a good place to start.”

Derryfield will be on the road again at Portsmouth on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m., while Goffstown will remain at home vs. Hanover, also on Wednesday, at 4:30 p.m. to continue their fall seasons.
