# Goffstown boys basketball hangs on for key road win against Dover

DOVER – In the midst of a two-game losing streak, the Goffstown High School boys basketball team needed to reverse its fortunes on the road Friday night against Dover, but the obstacle seemed to become more daunting after the Green Wave traveled to Derry last week and handed high-powered Pinkerton Academy its only loss of the season.

In the end, that’s what made Goffstown’s trip to Dover much sweeter after it walked out of Ollie Adams Gymnasium with a 59-58 Division I victory over the Green Wave. Goffstown, Dover and Manchester Memorial all have 6-6 records and are tied for 10th place in the Division I standings with six games left in the regular season.

“Any road win is a good win, but Dover is playing really good right now, so it was nice to see the way we came out and competed and worked hard,” Goffstown coach Ryan Cowette said. “We played harder defensively than we had been playing. That was a point of emphasis this week.”

Junior Noah Durham paced Goffstown to the victory with 14 points, while sophomore Xander McBournie added 12\. The Grizzlies were coming off losses of 78-56 to Trinity (8-4) and 61-52 against Nashua South (9-4).

“Coming off two losses, we needed this going into our next game and we beat a good team like Dover who just beat Pinkerton, it was a good win for the team,” Durham said. “They beat them in their building, so to come here and beat them in their building it’s a good feeling for sure.”

After following its 74-58 upset over Pinkerton (12-1) with Tuesday’s 63-61 victory over Bishop Guertin (4-9), Dover came out of the gates slow on Friday as Goffstown jumped out to a 16-8 lead.

The Green Wave battled back to take a 25-24 lead following a 3-pointer by David Cady (15 points), but Goffstown closed out the final two minutes of the second quarter with an 11-0 run that was capped off by a 3-pointer by McBournie and a buzzer-beating hoop by Camden Hujsak that gave the Grizzlies a 35-25 halftime lead.

“In the second quarter, we didn’t have the right energy or effort. You can’t have an 11-0 run at the end of the second quarter after you battled back to that point,” Dover coach Matt Fennessy said. “It was just self-inflicted stuff. I was proud that they battled until the end, but you just can’t dig holes like that.”

Dover trailed 50-42 entering the fourth quarter when it opened the quarter with a 6-0 run and then closed to within 52-51 midway through the quarter following a 3-pointer from Dylan Jabre (15 points).

After showing his potential this season, McBournie countered with a clutch 3-pointer to give the Grizzlies a 55-51 cushion.

“He’s gone through stretches where shots don’t fall and he’s not getting down on himself and he’s got a shooter’s mentality, so he’s going to keep shooting,” Cowette said. “He’s come a long way since the beginning of the year and he’s a huge reason why we’re in these games.”

Goffstown hit 4 of 6 six free throws to build a 59-55 lead with 18.7 seconds remaining before Dover’s David Cady (14 points) drained a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left.

“That run at the end of the first half was huge and it definitely gave us some confidence and momentum going into the second half,” Cowette said. “But it was fun to see us hold on and take their best punch down the stretch.”
