DOVER – After winning the past two Division III championships, the Gilford High School field hockey team has left every opponent it faced this season in its wake.

Now it’s time for the Golden Eagles to truly take aim at a three-peat.

Senior Liv Keenan scored both goals as Gilford picked up its 11th shutout to wrap up a perfect regular season via a 2-0 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas at Our Lady of Victory Stadium.

“It was pretty spectacular that we were able to play on turf in our last regular-season game, which is going to help prepare us for playoffs,” Gilford coach Joy Southworth said. “All season we’ve had a pretty challenging schedule and all the teams we’ve played have been very challenging from the start, so it’s done nothing but help prepare us for playoffs."

Gilford (14-0) will be the top seed in next week’s D3 tournament and will receive a bye into the quarterfinals on Oct. 27.

St. Thomas (6-5-2) will also be in the tournament and will likely be the No. 7 seed and host either Kearsarge (5-8) or Mascoma Valley (5-8) in next Thursday’s opening round. The official NHIAA tournament pairings will be released on Monday.

“I think we worked really hard together as a team this year and we built on it throughout the season and just executed,” Gilford senior back Addy Normandin said. “We’re hungry and we want it bad and we’re going to get it.”

The Golden Eagles peppered St. Thomas goalie Kensley Harris early but they were left frustrated after Harris made 14 of her 24 saves in a scoreless first quarter.

Keenan broke through five minutes into the second quarter off a deflection and ended the frame with a slapshot past Harris with 42 seconds left to give Gilford a 2-0 halftime lead.

“We have such a strong bond and we just connect on the field so well,” Keenan said. “In this next week of practice we have to stay really focused because we’ve been working hard all season for this.”

Keenan and Normandin were both first-team All-State selections last season and should both repeat that feat again after stellar senior seasons. Keenan is the leading scorer of an offense that has scored 55 goals, while Normandin leads a defense that has allowed only four.

“Those kids play with so much heart and hustle that it makes them unbeatable,” Southworth said.

Gilford goalie Madi Breton (three saves) and defender Camryn Coutts were new additions this year to a defense that has been virtually impossible to score upon. Half of the goals scored against the Golden Eagles this year came during a 3-2 win over Newport in the second game of the season.

“I just think our defense is really strong and we take a lot of pride not giving up any goals,” Normandin said.

Southworth has been impressed with how her team has continually improved and has strived to get better every time out.

“Every single game they have meshed a little more and it’s not just an individual player that brings us success, it’s the whole entire team,” Southworth said. “From the backs to the forwards, they all come together and we create a swarm.”

Southworth wants her team to continue its approach in its effort for a three-peat.

“They’re very hungry, but they know they have their work cut out for them and it’s not going to get handed to them,” Southworth said. “We’re not going to be complacent or play on our heels. We’re going to continue to fight with all of our might.”
