His Coe-Brown Northwood Academy team was again the undefeated No. 1 seed, playing the second of two games on the same field as a year ago, against the same opponent, fourth-seeded Hopkinton. But the way it ended for Frye couldn't have been more different. A year ago, the Bears picked up a win over Hopkinton to advance to the D3 title game for the first time in program history. But they played most of that second half against the Hawks and the title game without Frye, who went down early in the third quarter with a left knee injury, and Coe-Brown went on to lose in the final to Plymouth. The Bears again handled the Hawks to return to the title game, and Frye was front and center, scoring a game-high seven goals to help Coe-Brown get a 17-11 win. “Obviously, it’s on the mind,” Frye said after the game. “But you know, (assistant) coach (David) Dembowitz told me you’re going to think about it at the start, and you’re going to get hit, and you’re going to score a goal, and then you’ll be in the game. I took that to heart.” To Coe-Brown coach Tony DePalma, it was the best he's seen Frye play since the junior returned to the lineup about a month ago. “It was really wonderful to see him put it all together and play the best game’s played all year,” DePalma said. “Sam is the nicest, most coachable kid. He just tries to do everything right. It was awesome.” And the Bears needed it. After jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter, Coe-Brown started to struggle on faceoffs and Hopkinton took advantage of its opportunities to possess the ball. The Hawks scored four goals in 1:02 to take the lead and then added another a few minutes later to go up 6-4. DePalma called a timeout with 5:37 left before halftime, and whatever the Bears talked about during that break, it worked. Frye and Joseph Fenton (two goals) scored 12 seconds apart to tie the game 6-6 and Frye added two more goals before halftime to help make it 8-8 going into the break. “I don’t always put the question out there, but who is going to step up?” DePalma said. “Who is going to lead us out of this? And (Frye) was the guy. We’ve been lucky to have guys do that all year, but it was awesome that it was him.” Frye added two more goals in the third quarter, while Glenn Papineau (three goals), Robert Lee (two) and Charlie Frye (two) each added a goal to give Coe-Brown a 13-8 lead going into the fourth quarter. “They kept switching between zone and man (defense),” Frye said. “We have the guys on the field that really pick that apart and we just utilized that to the best of our ability. It’s a lot of dudes working together on the field, just being a well-oiled machine. There’s no one dude that changes the game. It’s all 10.” Frye spent too many moments over the last year thinking about what could have been different, but with one more game to go, he's got an opportunity to erase those thoughts. “I’m so excited,” he said. “The countless hours I spent in my room, thinking about missing last year. It’s all going to pay off now. I’m just really excited to get out there and have fun.” Coe-Brown will take on No. 4 Bow in the D3 title game at 5 p.m. Saturday at Bank of NH Stadium in Laconia.
