NASHUA – There is only one shot in basketball that is impossible to defend – the free throw.

The Manchester Memorial High School girls basketball team has made the foul shot a big part of its offense, and the results couldn’t be much better.

One game after making 28 free throws in an upset of previously-undefeated Londonderry, the Crusaders made 29 foul shots and held off Nashua South for a 43-35 win Friday night in Division I.

Memorial went 29-for-39 at the line, scored 11 of its 15 points in the first half from the charity stripe and made almost as many free throws in the first half as South took the entire game (5-of-12).

“One thing we did in both halves, which I think we’ve done successfully all year, was create fouls,” Memorial coach Jack Quirk said. “We were in the double bonus in both halves of this game. We were very early in the game against Londonderry.

“We create a lot of fouls. We try to go to the basket. We try to do things where people will foul us. One of our goals is to make more free throws than the other team attempts. You’re probably sending someone from the other team to the bench because their fouls are piling up.”

The Crusaders (6-1) did that, as South’s Caitlin Ackerman fouled out and Caitlyn Perry and Julie Fierley sat most of the second half in foul trouble.

“They just took it more to the hoop,” South coach Jenn Fay said.

Ashley Gendron led all scorers with 17 points for Memorial, nine of which came in the fourth quarter, while Amra Elezovic scored 11 of her 15 points from the free throw line. South (4-3) got seven points each from Nicole Gaudet and Tavia Rzasa, while Ackerman and Perry each had five.

The teams went into halftime tied at 15 and traded baskets over the first four minutes of the third quarter. South went up 23-19 on a putback by Ackerman, and when Memorial turned the ball over on its next possession, Elezovic was called for an intentional foul on Gaudet.

Gaudet made one of two free throws to make 24-19 and South took possession, but the ball went into a scrum underneath the basket. When it eventually went out of bounds, it was awarded to the Crusaders.

Memorial took advantage of the missed opportunity by South, outscoring the Panthers 13-7 over the next six minutes to take the lead for good. A layup by Taylor Leonard gave the Crusaders a 32-31 lead – their first since late in the second quarter – and South scored just four points over the final 6:15 of the game.

The win was the fifth straight for Memorial, while South has dropped three of its last four after a 3-0 start to the regular season. The Crusaders are back on the floor on Tuesday, when they play at Trinity, while the Panthers are off until Friday, when they travel to take on Pinkerton.
