GOFFSTOWN - The Bedford High School boys hockey team's locker room was a rather somber place to be Saturday after one period.

Flash forward 15 minutes, and the Bulldogs were ready to celebrate.

A four-goal second period will do that to a team.

Bedford broke a scoreless tie less than five minutes into the period, added two goals in a little more than a minute, and added one more with under a minute to play on the way to a 5-1 win over Bishop Brady at Sullivan Arena.

Jake Sanclemente had the first and the final tally in the second while Jack Sylvain had a goal and two assists and Parker Roberto (assist) and Owen Roberto also scored, as the Bulldogs (4-0-1) scored five goals or more for the fourth time in the Division I season.

"We played OK," Bedford coach Marty Myers said. "Obviously, the second period is where we played our best. I thought Brady had a good game plan. They congested the middle and tried to shut down the slot area.

"We try to make adjustments between each period, and they were playing a box-plus-one (defense), congesting the middle. We needed to find a way to get into that middle. We did a little bit and I think we’re pretty deep. We skated four lines the whole game, so that helped us."

Bedford's depth led to a lot of possession in the third period, but the Giants (2-3-1) were able to hold off the Bulldogs thanks to some strong play by goalie Matthew Strickland. After Bedford's Parker Joyce was called for a high stick, Bishop Brady got on the board on a power play goal by Kevin Anderson to make it 4-1 with 5:52 remaining.

"I thought the third period, we played really, really well," Giants coach Ed Seney said. "They’re deeper than we are and I thought we battled and gave ourselves a chance. If we do that, that’s all we can."

The Giants had opportunities in the second period, too, after Sanclemente scored at 4:34 to give Bedford a 1-0 game. Early on a power play, Bishop Brady had two great chances to tie the game, but couldn't capitalize, and the Giants took a penalty of their own 42 seconds later.

"Our first power play was pretty good, but then we got a penalty and we’re four-on-four," Seney said. "We don’t want to play four-on-for with them."

Bedford also had a short power play after that and Sylvain scored with three seconds left on it to make it 2-0\. Owen Roberto found the back of the net just 1:04 later to make it 3-0 and Sanclemente converted a shot-pass from Sylvain with 51.9 seconds remaining in the period.

"After the first one went in, the energy on the bench picked up a little bit," Sanclemente said. "The other lines picked it up and we were able to score. That helped. First period, everyone was kind of quiet, but second period, there was much more energy in the locker room. We went out in the third period feeling much better."
