The number of coaches leading two programs at different schools is even shorter, and when those two programs are a boys team and a girls team, well, that's a very select group. Ruppy Hailey, who has coached the Oyster River boys lacrosse team that last two springs, joined that small list this fall as the first-year head coach of the Nashua High School North field hockey team. While Hailey is a familiar face around the New Hampshire lacrosse circles, as he coach at Salem before leading the Bobcats, and with two sons, Drew (Bishop Guertin) and Adam (Salem), involved in the sport, he only got involved with field hockey as a coach a few years ago. But his background with the sport goes back further than that. “When I worked in Salem, I did a bunch of stuff for the athletic department,” Hailey said. “I helped out with the local TV station and was around the field hockey team in Salem a ton. I developed a liking for the game.” Hailey, who had wanted to get into coaching a fall sport, decided to participate in a USA Field Hockey clinic to get certified, and started coaching Sanborn's middle school program. After two years there, Hailey decided it might be time to start looking to get involved with a high school team. “I went back and forth with what I was going to do,” Hailey said about when he heard the North position was open. “I decided to look into it, probably in early June, and there was mutual interest. I talked to a few people in the sport and they thought it might be a good spot to start.” After winning making the playoffs in 2015 and 2016 - the program's only postseason appearances - the Titans have struggled the last two-plus year, with just one win in their last 32 games. That includes an 0-4 start to this season which Hailey feels has been better than what the results show. “They’re a hardened group from the record they’ve dealt with, but they’re able to play through adversity,” Hailey said. “They practice hard, they’re coachable and it’s a great group.” North has received great leadership from its captains, seniors Theresa Ellison, Lizzie Deck and Emma Tomasetti and junior Lauren Shaw. Sophomore goalie Maddie Goulet has also been a bright spot for the Titans in the early part of the season. The Titans are back in action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Merrimack. ### Figuring it out There has also been a bit of a learning curve for Bedford in the early part of Anneke McStowe's first season as the varsity head coach. This year, the Bulldogs (1-2-1) have a large group of seniors who have never played for McStowe before and it's lead to some of them having to make adjustments early in the year. "I have 11 seniors who I’ve never coached before," the coach said. "I’ve coached most of the other girls on the team. The passing is the big thing that I’m really trying to drive home. The concept of passing, short passes up the field, its not something their used to." McStowe felt Monday's 2-0 win over Bedford - the first of the season for the Bulldogs - was the first time that the team as a whole was able to excel in that area. "We had such productive and successful practices that I was prepared to see that in games," McStowe said. "We did see it in the jamboree and we saw it in our first game, but it really came to light (Monday)." ### Time to regroup After dropping the first two games of the year, Exeter bounced back with back-to-back shutouts last week, beating South 4-0 and North 5-0. But even with the wins, Blue Hawks coach Deb Grott is hoping to see a little more. "Each game, progressively, our team has gotten better," the coach said. "We have good talent, we just have to bring it all together. It’s great that we came away with two wins this week, but I’m still not happy with where they’re playing and how they’re playing." Grott started to see a turnaround in the second half of Exeter's second game, a 4-2 loss to Londonderry in which the Blue Hawks fell behind by four goals. "They pulled themselves up," she said. "If they could have played the last 15 minutes that way the whole entire game, it would have been a different game. To see them come back from that in the last 15 minutes was really good." Exeter will have had almost a full week off when it takes on Dover on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Grott hopes that was enough time to get the Blue Hawks to refresh and regroup. "We have about a week to practice hard and kind of get them where they need to be," Grott said. "We have a couple girls who are injured, key players. But that’s all right because they need to be able to work and play without those girls if they’re not there. "They know what to do, it’s just that when we’re on the field doing it, it doesn’t always come through. I have great hopes and aspirations for where they can be, we just have to work hard so that they can get there and do something good with this team." ### Keep on eye on ... It's a big couple of days for two of the favorites in Division I. On Wednesday, Windham plays host to Winnacunnet at 4 p.m. in a rematch of last year's D1 final, while Pinkerton travels to Nashua to face Bishop Guertin at 5:30 p.m. Then, the Astros and the Jaguars meet each other on Friday at 4 p.m. in Derry for a game that last year determined the No. 1 seed in the division.
