# Favorites, contenders prepare to battle for field hockey supremacy

Here's a look at some of the teams that will contend for New Hampshire's three field hockey division championships in 2017\. The regular season begins on Aug. 28.

## Division I

### Favorites

- **Timberlane (12-5-1 in 2016):** The defending D1 champions, Timberlane used an incredible run as the sixth seed to usurp two-time defending champ Winnacunnet in the title game. Led by incoming junior Sarah Padellaro, and senior Kylie Fitzpatrick, the Owls should be right back there contending again.
- **Winnacunnet (15-2):** Winnacunnet was the runner up in D1, and the top seed heading into the tourney. The Warriors only loss all season was the stunning 2-1 defeat to Timberlane in that title game. Led by senior Isobel Sargent, plenty of talent returns to the Warriors.

### Contenders

- **Manchester Central (13-2-1):** The second seed in the D1 tourney last season, the Little Green showed the state they were serious with an early season upset of Pinkerton. They could be a contender again this season if things go their way.
- **Pinkerton (10-6):** Pinkerton upset Londonderry to advance to the semifinals. Marley Mailloux returns but the losses of Abby Amato and Delaney Crowley could prove costly for the Astros.
- **Londonderry (10-4-1):** The Lancers made it to the quarterfinals last season, and the Lancers earned a bye for the first time since Laura Federico was named head coach. Krista Fletcher returns as a senior looking to lead the way in scoring.
- **Concord (11-4):** Concord was upset in the quarters by eventual champion Timberlane. After being shutout in that final contest, the Crimson Tide return with something to prove. Goalie Megan Martel returns as a sophomore and senior scorer Haley Munroe.

**Rest of the field:** Exeter, Bishop Guertin, Manchester Memorial, Merrimack, Nashua North, Nashua South, Bedford, Salem, Dover, Keene.

## Division II

### Favorites

- **Derryfield (15-2):** The Manchester school was stunned 1-0 to Windham in the DII final last season. Goalie Greer Woolley is graduated and will be a tough loss for the Cougars. Incoming junior Tori Sipes does return as an offensive leader.
- **Windham (15-2):** Another team led by young talent, Windham returns Paige Butler, who scored the game winner to capture the DII title. Finishing at 15-2 last season, Windham has a chance to repeat in the division.

### Contender

- **Kennett (10-6):** The Eagles have two quick games to open the season, starting with hosting Hanover. After winning state titles in 2013 and 2014, Kennett is looking to get back on top.

**Rest of the field:** Hollis Brookline, Souhegan, Milford, ConVal, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Hanover, St. Thomas, Goffstown, Oyster River, Kingswood, Sanborn, Lebanon, Merrimack Valley.

## Division III

### Favorite

- **Monadnock (13-1-2):** The Huskies were the top seed in D3 last year, but lose a key senior in Kitty Tolman. Junior Maddie Ellnor returns to lead the team after scoring 34 goals last season.

### Contenders

- **Gilford (15-1-1):** It took double overtime for Gilford to take the title from Pelham, led by incoming senior Kellie Ryan. It was the team’s first title since 1998, and the Eagles should be able to make a run once again.
- **Pelham (15-3):** Falling just short in the D3 title game last season, and junior goalie Ryan Atkins will be back between the pipes. Graduating 11 seniors, however, could prove to be a challenge, but incoming junior Abbey Bevens might be ready for a breakout season after 14 goals as a sophomore.

**Rest of the field:** Laconia, Franklin, White Mountains, Bow, Kearsarge, Conant, Bishop Brady, Stevens, Newfound, Newport, John Stark, Mascoma Valley, Littleton, Winnisquam, Berlin, Hopkinton.
