LONDONDERRY - Kerry Gobiel had an idea as to why the Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse team started off hot in each half of Tuesday's game against Londonderry.

As time crept along, the Cardinals got cold - literally.

Bishop Guertin scored eight times in the first 12 minutes of each half and the defense took care of the rest as the Cardinals rolled to a 12-2 win over the Lancers in the first Division I game of the season for both teams.

Kayli Keenan led the way for Bishop Guertin (1-0) with six goals and an assist while Katie Lupo had two goals and two assists. Madison Keating (assist) and Emily Santom also had two goals apiece while Grace Young made seven saves.

"They played well, but of course there’s lots of things we can improve on after Game 1," Gobiel said. "I think there were cold hands for sure, and I think we got a little tired getting those game legs into the motion of a high-intense game. It’s huge. I think it just sets the tone."

The Cardinals did that right from the opening draw, as Keenan scored just 25 seconds into the game and then netted her second goal off a free position four minutes later for a quick 2-0 lead before Londonderry (0-1) even had possession in Bishop Guertin's end.

Not long after that second goal, the Lancers appeared to score on their first shot, but the goal was waved off for a crease violation. The Cardinals went back down to the other end and Santom scored to make it 3-0, and Londonderry wouldn't officially get on the board until 18:14 remained in the second half.

"We’d come down and lose the ball quickly because somebody was nervous," Londonderry coach Scott Walden said. "We finally started to bring it down where we wanted to do and have a goal situation, and then throw it away or take bad shots. Then we were going back down to play defense."

Shannon Fraser and Allie Marsh each had a goal for the Lancers, who were without senior Catie Derhak (ankle), while Morgan Brutus had seven saves in her first start in goal.

"Defensively, I think after the first 12 minutes, they settled down and were much better," Walden said. "Morgan played pretty well in goal for the first time out there. Catie Derhak not playing, I thought she’d be ready to go, so that kind of hurts not having her on attack."

Goals by Lupo and Keating in a span of 1:42 made it 5-0 Bishop Guertin with 9:43 left in the first half, but Londonderry's defense was able to keep the Cardinals out of the back of the net the rest of the way.

But that changed at the start of the second half. Santom got her second goal of the game just 37 seconds into the half, as the Cardinals scored four times in the first 4:04 of the half to go up 9-0\. Londonderry would scored the next two goals, with Marsh's tally making it 9-2 with 12:39 to play.

The defense, led by Sydney Todd, Abby Hayhurst, Emma Anderson, Priscilla Bibeau and Amelia Piercy, didn't give up anything else.

"I knew this would be a really strong defense for us," Gobiel said. "To see them come out and get groundballs and turnovers, it’s exactly what we need."
