NASHUA - Erin Carney thought that if the Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team could get off to a good start Friday night, it might take Bedford out of its game long enough to let the Cardinals get an early lead.

In the first four-plus minutes, things couldn't have gone much better for Bishop Guertin.

The Cardinals opened the game with a 17-2 run, including two 3-pointers by Carney, and forced a dozen Bedford turnovers in the first quarter, as Bishop Guertin cruised to a 58-26 win over the Bulldogs in a Division I game in Nashua.

Carney finished with a game-high 14 points and Ava Owens added 12 points as the Cardinals (2-0) led throughout, going up by 20 points at halftime while Bedford (2-1) had 29 turnovers.

"Going into the game, we needed to start strong, we needed to get a lead on them so we could build off that," Carney said. "I think everyone was really hyped and ready for the game, so we came out on all cylinders, firing."

Hannah Muchmore and Brianna Wilcox were also in double figures, scoring 10 points apiece, as seven different players scored points for the Cardinals.

"We are at our best when we get balanced scoring," Bishop Guertin coach Brad Kreick said. "Don’t get me wrong, if someone goes off for 30, that’s great. I think we’re at our best when we have three or four kids in double figures. These kids work their tails off for us."

Bedford was led by Saphia Mumpini, who scored eight points off the bench, and Kendra Barnard added six points.

But the early turnovers doomed the Bulldogs from the start, as they trailed 20-4 at the end of the first quarter and 31-11 at the half.

"The frustration is that we practiced that," Bedford coach Sue Thomas said. "We just came out scared and we shouldn’t have. We know how to break that press. We know what they’re going to do, we know their offense, we know against the zone what it was going to be. The one thing I said to them before the game was take care of the basketball.

"Really, in the first half, I wasn’t upset about our defense. We gave up 31 points in the first half, but they’re a great team. It was the 11 (points scored), and turnovers. I didn’t think at this point in the season that we could beat them, but I was hoping for a little bit more."

Bedford turned the ball over on its first two possessions, leading to a 3-pointer by Wilcox and a basket by Muchmore for a quick 5-0 lead. Amanda Jonas got the Bulldogs on the board, but the Cardinals scored the next 13 points, getting two 3s from Carney and another from Aaliyah Forman (seven points) to take an 18-2 lead.

"(Kreick) is saying we have to keep moving the ball, get them off their game and that’s what we did," Carnery said. "We moved it fast and we made sure everyone was contributing, and that really helped for our success."

The Bulldogs were able to keep the Cardinals scoreless for almost four minutes to open the second half, but they were unable to score themselves. A 3 each by Forman and Carney gave Bishop Guertin a 37-13 lead with 3:15 left in the third and got the Cardinals rolling again.

"I think we might have lost a little focus early third quarter," Kreick said. "That’s probably on me. The thing we talked about at halftime is trying to stay aggressive, but we emphasis playing with poise. You’ve got a 20-point lead, take care of the ball. Every time we encourage them to come off the gas pedal a little bit, it’s not a great thing."

Bishop Guertin led 43-19 at the end of the third and went up by 30-plus points with a little under three minutes left to play on the way to the win.
