NASHUA – The crowd at Nashua High School South’s Belanger Gym saw more twists Thursday night than M. Night Shyamalan could ever dream up.

First Nashua North was ahead as South struggled to score. Then the Panthers took the lead as the Titans went cold from the field. Then South was pulling away in the third quarter, only to see North come back. The Panthers pulled away again in the fourth, but the Titans had one more rally left in them.

After David Dunham hit the second of two free throws for South, tying the game at 50 with three seconds left, Anthony Farmer’s 3-pointer from just inside halfcourt at the buzzer hit nothing but the bottom of the net, giving the Titans a 53-50 victory.

Farmer’s shot was just one of many clutch baskets North came up with in a game that went back and forth throughout.

And he did it after taking a hit to the mouth that forced him to leave the gym in the final seconds.

“He is going to see an orthodontist (Friday),” North coach Andy Otocka said. “His front tooth is … . Give assistant coach Tom Casey an assist because he went and got him.

With under a minute to go and the Panthers up 49-48, South tried to inbound the ball, but an errant pass was scooped up at midcourt by Farmer, who drove to the basket alone. Farmer missed the layup, Adam Fay missed the put back and South’s Anthony Muccioli was fouled after grabbing the board.

Farmer was hurt on the play, and went racing from the gym as Muccioli missed the front end of a one-and-one and North grabbed the rebound. The Titans took a timeout and brought the ball in from in front of their bench.

As the ball came into play, South’s Nilsson Basora tumbled into the North bench and couldn’t get back up. Fay missed a 3, but North got the rebound, and with South down a man, Parker Jamerson was left alone by the basket for the go-ahead score with 13 seconds left.

Dunham was fouled on the other end, driving to the basket with three seconds left. He missed the first free throw, but the South sophomore regrouped to make the second and tie the game.

And then came Farmer’s buzzer-beater.

On a night when North was without Ryan Gauthier and Mike O’Connor, and after Javon Williams fouled out with six minutes left in the game, the Titans (5-3 in Division I) needed it.

“He has been our MVP, you don’t even need to vote,” Otocka said. “He comes up with big plays, big defensive rebounds and you know you’re getting 12 points out of him.”

Farmer finished with 13 points to lead North while Jake Mellin added 12 points and Williams chipped in with nine.

Muccioli scored 27 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead South (2-7), which has lost six in a row since its upset of Bishop Guertin on Jan. 5.

The Panthers looked like they might end that streak in the first half, thanks to Muccioli, who had 16 points before halftime. The junior also had South’s first two baskets of the second half that stretched a three-point lead to a 32-25 advantage.

North slowly chipped away at the lead and went ahead on Damon King’s 3-pointer that just beat the buzzer to end the third quarter.

But South opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run and led 45-39 with 4:35 left to play.

That lead lasted for another three minutes, as two free throws by Jared Maloney put the Panthers ahead 49-43 with 1:54 left. But North answered with two free throws from Farmer and Fay hit a 3 to cut the lead to one with 1:05 to play.

“What can you do?” South coach Nate Mazerolle said. “We had a defensive breakdown for one of their 3s. Essentially, in the last 30 seconds, with a missed one-and-one, we went 1-for-4 from the line. We make one more free throw, we’ve got another opportunity most likely.”

Both teams will have an opportunity for a win on Tuesday, as North hosts Spaulding and South heads to Winnacunnet.
