It was exciting. It was another chapter in the Granite State’s best high school rivalry, as the Exeter and Winnacunnet boys basketball teams put on a show for 32 minutes in front of more than two thousand. At the final horn it was the host Blue Hawks celebrating a convincing 69-59 over the Warriors to stay undefeated. The Blue Hawks earned the victory on the back of strong defense and a deep offensive attack. Kevin Henry put in 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Ryan Grijalva added 18 himself. Sophomore guard Josh Morrisette added 14 points and Cam Clark had nine. “We just work hard,” Henry said. “Every practice we’re working hard. I think that showed (Friday). Coach (Jeff Holmes) prepares us well in practice and it shows in the game.” The game swung on the back of a massive second quarter for the Blue Hawks (10-0). Down 19-15 after eight minutes, Exeter dialed it in on defense and outscored the Warriors by 17 in the second to go into halftime up 37-24. The Warriors (8-2) closed the gap to six in the second half, but Exeter made sure they couldn’t turn the corner. Winnacunnet turned the ball over 18 times compared to just eight by Exeter. “I have a lot of veteran guys,” Holmes said. “I have a lot of guys that played a lot of minutes last year. We had a successful season last year. I think that plays a part in that type of situation.” The Warriors stayed in the game thanks to their two senior leaders Ben Allen and Jack Schaake. Schaake had 13 points and three assists for Winnacunnet while Allen had a massive game with 33 points and six rebounds. However the turnovers were what eventually did the Warriors in, as they couldn’t string together strong offensive possessions. “We made too many mistakes to beat a team of that caliber,” Winnacunnet coach Jay McKenna said. “We missed too many defensive assignments, turned it over too many times. We kind of offensively went to sleep in the second quarter. We could have done some things better that would have put us in a better position.” An added dynamic that kept the Warriors off balance was Exeter’s ability to make mid-range shots. Exeter only shot 2 for 11 from 3-point range, but the Blue Hawks made up for it with precise shooting from 15-18 feet, especially from Henry and Grijalva. “They have the ability to create off the dribble and hit with a hand in their face,” McKenna said. “If they’re making those shots they’re a very tough team to beat.” ### Girls: Exeter 56, Winnacunnet 49 It had been more than a decade since the Exeter girls basketball team had beaten Winnacunnet but Friday was the start of a new streak as the Blue Hawks scored the final 13 points of the game over the final 2:18 to defeat the Warriors 56-49. It was an incredibly messy game, with Winnacunnet (2-11) turning the ball over 36 times and Exeter (5-6) turning it over 21 times itself. However the depth of the Blue Hawks won out as Winnacunnet senior Marisa Lamprey fouled out in the fourth while Exeter played 12 girls and had 10 scorers. Exeter got 14 points from Julia Sherwin and 10 points, and five steals, from Carly Pierce. In total, the Blue Hawks forced 15 steals with their pressing defense. The Warriors got 10 points and eight rebounds from junior forward Bryn Stokel off the bench, and senior Michaela Linnehan had nine of her own. After trading buckets early, the Warriors took the lead three minutes into the first quarter and never gave it up until the final stretch of the game when the defensive pressure from the Blue Hawks proved to be too much. A layup from Sherwin put Exeter ahead with 71 seconds left and baskets from Pierce and Morgan Murphy 12 seconds apart blew the roof off the gym and sealed the win for the Blue Hawks.
