CONCORD - An early three-goal spurt and a hat-trick performance from senior Carissa Towlson led the Exeter High School girls hockey team to a 5-2 victory over previously unbeaten Concord Wednesday night at Everett Arena.

The triumph ended a three-game losing skid for the Blue Hawks (6-3-1), who were outscored, 19-5, over the stretch.

Exeter scored more goals on the Crimson Tide (10-1) over the opening six minutes than the latter surrendered in nine of their first 10 games. The Blue Hawks received three goals from their first line on the team’s first six shots on goal over the opening 5:51 of the first period.

“We had a pretty good pep talk in the locker room after the three losses we’ve had,” Towlson said. “Kind of needed to fix something so we went out hyped, ready to go.”

Towlson scored Exeter’s first two goals over the first 5:15 of play, finding the back of the net from the slot and below the left circle. Towlson, a center, and right wing Shauna Vadeboncoeur both assisted on left wing Dakota Markey’s tally that gave the Blue Hawks a three-goal cushion.

“Sometimes when you’re in a hole a little bit like we have been the last three games, you get to trying to do too much at one time,” Exeter coach Geoff Taylor said. “I thought that unit did a really good job of focusing on creating space and seams and time for each other.”

Concord coach Patrick McDonough said fatigue was a factor for his players over the opening seven minutes of the contest. Wednesday marked Concord’s third game in as many days. The Crimson Tide defeated Berlin-Gorham, 2-1, on Monday and St. Thomas-Winnacunnet, 5-0, on Tuesday.

Towlson secured her hat trick and built a 4-0 Blue Hawks advantage with 56.5 seconds left in the second period. After Eva Cooper created a Crimson Tide defensive-zone turnover, Towlson collected the puck below the right circle and went top shelf on Concord goaltender Abby Corbett (24 saves) to record her team-leading 28th goal and 40th point of the season.

Markey and Vadeboncoeur assisted on Katie Kopecky’s power-play goal that built a 5-0 Exeter lead with 6:24 remaining.

The Crimson Tide broke up Exeter goaltender Izzy Day’s shutout bid behind power-play goals from Kaitlyn McKinnon and Joanna Dustin over the game’s final 3:14\. Dustin assisted on McKinnon’s goal while Jaelyn Kelleher earned the helper on Dustin’s tally.

Concord went 2-for-5 on the power play and 1-for-5 on the penalty kill.

“I think having three games in three days caught up to us but minus that first five, seven minutes, I thought the last 2 ½ periods were the way we wanted to play,” McDonough said. “The kind of silver lining we looked at was we didn’t start the way we wanted to but by the time we started playing the way we wanted to, we eventually made it a 2-2 game.”

Day, who Taylor said stood on her head, finished with 31 saves, which included turning away close-range breakaway shots from both Kelleher and Concord junior Nicole Jones.

“We got real fortunate early,” Taylor said. “It’s come up in some of our games recently, I know about puck luck that we weren’t getting and we finally got some bounces a little bit (Wednesday).”
