BEDFORD - Henry Vogt had already done his part Wednesday to help the Exeter High School boys lacrosse get in front of Bedford.

And with the game on the line, the sophomore goalie stepped in the final minutes to shut the door on the Bulldogs.

Vogt made three of his 18 saves down the stretch, with the Blue Hawks clinging to a one-goal lead, and Exeter was able to get an insurance goal late to hang to an 8-7 win over Bedford in Division I action.

Mike Penna scored with 4:37 left to give Exeter a 7-6 lead and the senior added three assists, including one on the game-winning goal by Dayton Christenson. Ben Baldasaro had three goals for the Blue Hawks (6-2) and Christenson and Spencer Clark also scored two goals apiece as Exeter won its fifth in a row, and second this season over Bedford.

But it was Vogt who Exeter coach Gerry Holly felt was the difference.

"I thought we were a little sloppy at times," Holly said. "I didn’t think we possessed the ball great and we made a lot of mental mistakes in the offensive end. Defensively, I thought we played OK. I thought we could have played better. Our goalie was clearly the difference. He stood on his head, otherwise there’s no way we walk off with a win in that one. He was definitely the man."

Vogt made 11 of his 18 saves in the first half, including six in a row on a long Bedford possession in the second quarter. Three of those came with Exeter a man down and helped the Blue Hawks take a 4-2 lead into halftime.

"A lot of that game rested on Henry and he did a fantastic job," Bedford coach Matt Guerard said. "Part of our problem was we needed to get into the mindset that this is phenomenal goalie and we needed to place the ball. We need to take shots from inside the 12-yard line and not 15 or 17\. Unfortunately, for the first half, that’s where a lot of our shots were coming from and he eats them up all day long."

Bedford (6-4) got three goals from Dawson Clark while John Cusack had two goals and an assist and Kyle Fink also had a goal and an assist. Devin LaFrance added a goal and Luke Boll made six saves.

Exeter was able to get out to a 2-0 lead on two goals by Spencer Clark, the second of which came with 6:13 left in the first quarter. Bedford scored twice in the final 1:05 of the frame, including a goal by Dawson Clark with 10.8 seconds left, to tie it at 2 going into the second.

But the Blue Hawks quickly got the lead back, as Baldasaro scored 1:14 into the quarter and Christenson netted his first of the game just 1:43 after that.

"Starting the game down 2-0 early, it changes your mindset," Guerard said. "You’re all hyped up, ready for the game to start, and all of a sudden you fall down. You better get it in gear because the other team is here to play. It’s a hard way to start a game."

Bedford cut the lead in half to open the third quarter, as Dawson Clark scored 1:38 into the half to make it 4-3\. Christenson and Cusack traded goals to keep it a one-goal game after that, but Exeter got the lead back up to two when Penna found Baldasaro for his third of the game with 3:50 to go in the quarter.

"He had a few big assists for us," Holly said of Penna. "He draws a lot of attention down there. I thought maybe he was pressing a little at times. We’ve got to figure out a way so that we keep freeing him up. You want to be as balanced as you possibly can. People pay so much attention to him, he’s doing a really good job of keeping his head up."

Another late goal from Dawson Clark, this time with 13.7 seconds left in the third, made it a 6-5 Exeter lead going into the final quarter, and that's where it stood until Cusack tied it at 7 with 5:37 to play.

But Exeter won the ensuing faceoff and Penna was able to rifle a low shot past Boll just a minute later to give the Blue Hawks a 7-6 lead. Exeter got another faceoff win, but back-to-back turnovers set the Bulldogs up with a good look for the tying goal. Both times Vogt came up with the save.

Penna then found Christenson alone out in front of the Bedford goal to give Exeter an 8-6 lead with 1:29 to play. The Bulldogs won the faceoff and took a timeout right away to set something up on offense.

Out of the break, Fink had an open lane to the goal but Vogt was able to turn away the shot. The Bedford senior did find the back of the net with 25.7 seconds left to cut the lead to one, but the Blue Hawks won the faceoff and ran out the clock.
