HAMPTON – After not playing her freshman year, Elle Emery emerged onto the scene as a sophomore by netting 47 goals in helping lead the Winnacunnet High School girls lacrosse to the championship game last season.

With that standout way to begin her career, Emery set her sights on reaching a hundred goals during her junior season, an achievement she eclipsed when she netted five goals during Monday afternoon’s 16-9 victory over Hanover.

“I used this as my goal at the start of the season, so I was really happy to get it,” Emery said. “But I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. They set me up with the passes for success out there.”

Emery now has 54 goals on the season for a Winnacunnet team that improved 14-1 following its 13th straight victory. The Warriors only loss came at the hands undefeated Portsmouth, the reigning Division I champion.

“She’s a really strong player and works the left side for us and does a great job of not only scoring but feeding. She’s a complete player,” Winnacunnet coach Glenn McKenzie said. “She’s strong, she’s really strong. She knows what she’s doing. She knows when to back out when she’s getting a double team like a lot of teams do.”

Emery showed that power and awareness on the milestone goal, as Hanover’s Eleanor Edson was smothering her. Emery shook her off enough and fired a left-handed shot from just inside the circle past Hanover goalie Charlotte Robinson to give Winnacunnet a 12-6 lead with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter.

“Sometimes I just shoot it for a Hail Mary, but it works out,” Emery said.

Winnacunnet senior and University of Vermont commit Sklya Mace (four goals) has formed a strong scoring duo for an offense that is averaging 14.1 goals a game.

“We trained a lot with each other this past summer and just watching her develop as a player she had grown so, so confident these past two years,” Mace said. “We can always count on her to take the one (vs.) one. She’s really good under pressure and she’s just an overall smart player and she deserves it. I’m really happy for her.”

Hanover (10-6) jumped out to 3-0 lead on a pair of goals from Bumpsie Loughman (four goals) and one by Maeve Bradley. That served as a wake up call for the Warriors, as they reeled off six straight goals and took a 10-6 halftime lead on goals by Emery and Mace to close out the second quarter.

“What was important was that the coach told us we needed to switch around and have more focus out there. We just can’t throw it away on offense,” Emery said. “We’ve struggled in the past at the beginning. The most important thing is that we find a way to win every time and we find that strength in that dynamic.”

Winnacunnet will now play in what could be a Division II championship game preview when the Warriors travel Friday to Merrimack (13-0) to conclude the regular season for the top seed in the tournament. Winnacunnet dropped a 10-6 decision to Windham in last year’s championship game and its motivation has been there since.

“We’re hoping that Merrimack will go well, we’re not sure how that’s going to go, but either way we want to make a playoff push and hopefully get a ring,” Emery said. “We need to get back there. In the loss in the locker room we said we’re going to win it next year. Now we’re going to go out there and do that.”
