As the Hanover High School senior lined up to take a penalty stroke with 2.6 seconds left Thursday in a tie game against Souhegan, the only thing she was thinking was that she couldn't miss. Edmonds ripped a shot that just made its way inside the right post and the Marauders celebrated the 2-1 victory over the Sabers, in a game where they didn't have many opportunities to score. "Don’t miss it," Edmonds said of what was on her mind. "I know the goalie (Annie Raduazzo) really well, she plays club with me. I was really nervous, but I kept my composure. It felt good. I felt that crispness and it went flying right where I wanted it to go." The play leading up to the stroke was just one of three times Hanover (2-0) had the ball inside the offensive circle in the second half, as Souhegan (1-1) dominated possession and kept the field titled toward the Marauders end after halftime. "They were playing really well and moving it really well," Hanover coach Jean Essex said. "You can’t underestimate how good Souhegan is. To come on the road, in our second game of the season, and beat them, it’s kind of fun. "We spend a lot of time on defense. Offense sells tickets, defense wins titles. We spend a lot of time working on defense and having the defense be a part of the offense. Everybody has to learn how to markup." Grace Coughlin also scored for the Marauders, giving them a 1-0 lead with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter. Hanover made that lead stand until Tatum Zampella tied it with 1:32 to go in the third. Souhegan finished with 15 penalty corners, and was awarded a penalty stroke of its own in the second quarter, when Hanover's Stella Pinto stopped a ball that was going into the goal with her feet. Miya Chorney took the stroke, but Hanover's Olivia Evans (seven saves) got her pad on the shot, the ball bounced off the right post and landed just outside the goal, where Evans knocked it away before it could cross the line. "That’s a tough thing for it to come down to," Souhegan coach Kelli Braley said. "We had our chance on one, too, and hit rings off the post. They buried theirs. Sometimes it works out that way. "The first two quarters are what did us. We were flat and slow and we played scared, and I’m not sure why. New team, but they’re experienced players and they’ve played before. There’s no excuse for that. The third and fourth quarter, we took control." The Sabers were also down a pair of seniors, with Cali Bishop and Cari Mastergeorge out, while senior Karina Kruchynska left the game in the second half. "That’s tough when you’re missing that leadership on the field," Braley said. "We have the depth, we have the skill to be able to do it. We just have to put the pieces together."
