Jimmy Lauzon has experienced the CHaD East-West All-Star Football Game before, serving as an assistant coach for the East team in the past.

But this year, the Londonderry High School coach has moved over into the driver's seat, serving as the East team's head coach for the first time and the ride has been a little different than he might have expected.

"It’s a lot of work and it’s probably more than people would think goes into an all-star game," Lauzon said. "We’re competitive guys, we certainly don’t want to lose the game. You’re always trying to find ways to motivate 44 guys and if you don’t know them as well, that’s always difficult. There’s just a lot more pressure and work than I anticipated. I’ve tried to put my own little twists on things. It’s a good learning experience."

That experience will be complete Saturday, when Lauzon's East all-stars take on the West all-star team in the 2019 game, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. at the University of New Hampshire. The East will look to snap a two-game losing skid to the West, which holds a 5-2 edge in the series all-time.

For the players, it's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to share a field as teammates with guys who were opponents for the previous four years.

"Coming together with all the guys we played against this year is very different," Exeter's Adam Gray said. "We’re all used to being ‘the guy’ at our own schools, but we’re not here. It was cool to see how people had to come out of their comfort zone. The coaches are doing a great job to get us all playing time."

Lauzon went into the process trying to find a balance between his style as a head coach and the abilities of the players. On offense, the East will split time at quarterback between Evan Cormier, who played for Lauzon at Londonderry, and St. Thomas' Shawn DeKorne.

"A lot of guys have stepped up and learned everything," Lauzon said. "We knew what we’d get from Cormier, but Shawn DeKorne has done a great job picking everything up. He corrected me a couple of times on play calls, which tells me how quickly he picked everything up. He and Cormier have shared reps every day and they’ve done a great job of supporting each other."

For guys like Gray, who spent his high school career playing in a run-heavy offense, trying to transition to something different has been a fun challenge.

"I’m starting on defense and then I’m rotating on offense as well," he said. "We run wing-T (at Exeter) and it’s all running the ball. It’s weird to spread the ball out. The formations and routes were a little different, but defense is just defense. It’s hitting, it’s reading, it’s all that stuff."

The East's offensive line will feature some players that Lauzon has seen up close for a number of years, including Pinkerton's Rob Fahey and Salem's Jared White, and some that have risen to the occasion, including Inter-Lakes' Ryan Caswell.

"The line looks great," Fahey said. "We’ve got kids from all different teams, which is pretty cool. It’s for a great cause and it’s been a lot of fun. It’s made it all worthwhile. It gives you something to play for. It makes coming together a lot easier because you know what you’re playing for, you’re raising money for this."

On defense, Londonderry's Pat Hagearty, Sanborn's Owen Snively and Winnacunnet's Joe MacDougall will lead the East up front, with Gray and Salem's Will Michaud stepping in at the second level for Saturday night's game.

"It makes it really exciting," Lauzon said. "When you talk about playing under the lights, it just gets people up a little more. I think the kids are pretty amped up. We have a lot of guys who are good about just going about their business in practice. I’m hoping that when we get out there, on that stage, they ramp it up and get after it."
