So when Duval heard his number called late in the fourth quarter, he knew it was time to make something happen. Duval took a handoff from quarterback Connor Robert on a sweep, cut up field and easily found the end zone on a 7-yard run with 4:28 left in Saturday’s CHaD East-West NH Football All-Star Game, giving West a lead for the first time in the second half. The win was the fifth for West in seven games, and two consecutive wins in the series after losing the previous two. Moises Celaya (Hanover) received the Bo Dickson Award as the game’s most valuable player after kicking a 33-yard field and three extra points to go with two touchbacks on kickoffs and three punts inside the 20-yard line, including two punts inside the East 5. “I really liked the way we battled back coming out in the second half,” West coach Eric Brown (Concord) said. "We got down again and battled back. We just kept battling. “We talked about that early, there are going to be some high points and some low points. It’s going to be how we stay together during the low points that’s going to make the difference. We made some good plays at the end.” After taking a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter, West trailed 14-7 at halftime. On the first possession of the second half, Sean Holland (Nashua South) found Garrett Macomber (Plymouth) for a 5-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14. But a fumbled punt by Duval (Goffstown) was recovered by Tim Bouchard (St. Thomas) for East at the West’s 23-yard line. On the next play, Cody Graham (Portsmouth) found Bouchard for a touchdown and a 20-14 lead. “I had to be positive and have short-term memory loss,” Duval said of his response to the fumble. “I did make a mistake, but I had to come out there and try to earn back what I made a mistake for. I had to score since I fumbled that punt return. I had to get in the end zone and redeem myself.” Duval finished with 181 total yards and the game-winning touchdown while Robert (Bedford) ran for 73 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter to give West the lead. Despite holding an edge in yards (369-335) and turnovers (2-0), East was unable to take advantage of some opportunities in the second half. Graham got the East’s offense down to the West 21-yard line, and on third-and-6, found Bouchard for a 21-yard touchdown. But a holding call wiped the score off the board, and an unsportsmanlike flag after the play pushed East back to midfield. In the fourth quarter, with West driving, Robert lost a fumble that was recovered by East’s Evan Welch (Winnacunnet) at the 22-yard line with 11:44 left to play. The East offense ate up over four minutes on the ensuing drive, but lined up for punt from the West 42. The snap was bobbled by Kyle Gleason (Timberlane) and his kick went out of bounds at the West 45 with 7:09 to play. Five plays later, Duval found the end zone. “I think we would have had the game put away late if we could have pinned them on that punt,” East coach Craig Kozens (Laconia) said. “That would have been huge. If we could have given them a 90-yard field with five minutes left, maybe something different would have happened. That’s football.” East was able to pick up a couple of first downs after the West touchdown, but after a 6-yard pass from Graham to Sibanda gave East a second-and-4 at the West 44, the drive stalled. Sibanda finished the game with 220 total yards, including 105 yards rushing, while Mitchel Stokes (Spaulding) caught four passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. John Cantwell (Dover) also had a touchdown catch among his two receptions and 45 yards, while Graham was 11 of 21 for 162 yards and three scores. Holland was 5 of 10 passing for 79 yards and a touchdown in the second half and finished the game 6 of 18 for 91 yards. Gleanson led the East defense with five tackles, two for loss, and a forced fumble, while Colby Moore (Plymouth) had 6.5 tackles for the West and Peter Thibault (Newport) had six tackles, including 3.5 for loss.
