A few hours later, the senior showed how dangerous of a weapon he can be kicking the ball for the Winnacunnet football team against Manchester Memorial. With already two field goals under his belt, Duffy finished the night off in style by booting an 18-yarder as time expired in regulation to lift Winnacunnet’s to a 30-27 Division I victory on Alumni Field to give the Crusaders their first loss in the process. “It feels great to be able to help the team the time we need it most,” Duffy said. “I felt good during the day, so I was glad I was able to finish it off strong. I felt pretty confident. I felt like I could kick it from a billion yards.” Duffy missed last week’s 26-13 loss to Portsmouth-Oyster River due to timing conflicts with soccer, but Winnacunnet coach Ryan Francoeur was glad he was back this week to be the ace he had up his sleeve in crunch time. Winnacunnet (5-1) took the ball over after forcing a three-and-out midway through the fourth quarter to take the ball over at its own 49-yard line with the game tied at 27-27\. The Warriors churned out the final 6:11 of the game by running the ball 13 times to get to Memorial’s 1 with 3.3 seconds remaining. From there, Duffy split the uprights with ease. “We’ve got a lot of faith in him and I can’t think of another situation in coaching football for a Winnacunnet team where we get to the 1-yard line and don’t go for the win running the ball,” Francoeur said. “He’s got such a live leg and he came up huge for us (Friday).” Memorial (5-1) began erasing a 14-0 deficit with Ledum Adumene’s 17-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. After Memorial quarterback Alex Sutherland (12 rushes, 76 yards) scored on a 19-yard run, the Crusaders forced a fumble on a sack of Winnacunnet quarterback Sean Griffin. Jacob Schuff (four carries, 90 yards) took the first play on the ensuing drive 47 yards for a score to give Memorial a 20-14 lead with 4:29 left in the second quarter. “It was a physical contest, they did a really good job and they jumped on us real fast and we struggled getting off the bus (Friday),” Memorial coach Rob Sturgis said. “I’m really proud of how the kids responded. (Winnacunnet) made just a few more adjustments in the second half.” Duffy was then called upon to even the score beginning with a 27-yard field goal with 0.2 seconds left in the second quarter to trim Winnacunnet’s deficit to 20-17 at halftime. Winnacunnet came up with a huge defensive play on the next opportunity, when a sack of Sutherland resulted in the ball being kicked around with the Warriors eventually recovering at Memorial’s 31-yard line. Duffy nailed a 24-yard field goal six plays later to tie the score at 20-20 with 2:13 left in the third quarter. “This is my first year kicking and it’s going great,” Duffy said. “I’m just happy I’m being as utilized as I can and I’m glad I’m not letting the team down.” Memorial countered with a drive that ended on a 2-yard touchdown run by Johan Quintero Salazar (13 carries, 79 yards), but Winnacunnet responded when Griffin followed a 27-yard pass to Jaxon McDonald (four catches, 85 yards) with a 13-yard scoring pass to McDonald to tie the game at 27-27 with 8:02 left in regulation. Griffin completed 11 of 18 passes for 180 yards and also threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Brian McCown to open the game’s scoring. Griffin then added a 2-yard touchdown keeper in the first quarter. “We knew there would be ups-and-downs in this game and we knew we had to hold them off enough to stay in the game,” Francouer said. “I was especially proud of the way our defense played in the second half to give our offense a chance to do that.”
