But as the rest of the field in the Division II boys lacrosse tournament would remind you, there's no guarantee of it happening. Dover (16-0) and Derryfield (17-0) enter the playoffs as two of three undefeated lacrosse teams in the state - Hopkinton in D3 is the other - but both have some potentially tough matchups down the road, including No. 3 Hollis Brookline and No. 4 Portsmouth. While Dover and Derryfield put up similar numbers offensively, the difference could come down to defense. Both teams averaged 15.2 goals per game, but the Cougars gave up just 2.8 while the Green Wave allowed 6.8. They also had eight common opponents, which Derryfield won by an average of 11 goals, while Dover had an advantage of 6.8 goals in nine games. All four quarterfinal matchups are scheduled for Saturday. Here's a look at each game. **No. 8 Keene (10-8) at No. 1 Dover (16-0), 6 p.m.** - This will be the first meeting between the two teams not only this season, but since 2014, before the Green Wave moved up to Division I for a two-year cycle. Dover has faced some challenges to its perfect mark in recent weeks, beating Portsmouth on a late goal on May 15 and needing overtime to knock off St. Thomas on May 24\. But the Green Wave come in averaging 15.2 goals per game and have allowed 10 or more goals just three times. Keene comes into the game off a win over Winnacunnet in the prelims and the Blackbirds are 8-4 in their last 12 games after a 2-4 start. **No. 5 Merrimack Valley (11-4) at No. 4 Portsmouth (13-3), 6:30 p.m.** - The Pride managed to avoid another first-round upset, holding off No. 12 Bow in the prelims. Merrimack Valley will face an unfamiliar foe in the quarterfinals, as the Pride and the Clippers didn't play during the regular season. In fact, it's the first meeting between the two since the 2008 D3 semifinals, a game won by Portsmouth. The Clippers are on a roll, having won eight of their last nine, with the lone loss to Dover. **No. 10 St. Thomas (9-8) at No. 2 Derryfield (17-0), 5 p.m.** - These two meet in the quarterfinals for the third year in a row after the Saints went on the road to knock off No. 7 Timberlane in the prelims. Since moving up to D2 three years ago, Derryfield has gone 5-0 against St. Thomas, including a 15-1 win over the Saints on April 19\. St. Thomas backed into the playoffs, going 1-5 in its final six games after a 7-2 start. The Cougars have had just three games decided by under 10 goals this season and have won 30 games in a row. **No. 6 Windham (13-6) at No. 3 Hollis Brookline (14-3), 5 p.m.** - The Cavaliers have had the Jaguars number this year, as HB beat Windham twice during the regular season by scores of 9-5 and 9-7\. The Cavs ended the regular season on an 11-game winning streak that included two stretches of four games in four days. HB has been solid defensively all year, allowing more than nine goals just once all season. Windham reaches the quarterfinals after beating No. 11 Kingswood in the prelims, the Jaguars fifth straight win.
