GOFFSTOWN - The Division I playoffs don't start for another 10 days, but the Dover High School boys basketball team wanted to get a head start on what the postseason will be like.

Knowing that they'll be on the road in the first round, the Green Wave treated Friday night's game at Goffstown - a place many of them had never been before - as such.

After falling behind 8-1 in the first three minutes of the game, Dover picked it up defensively, turned stops into offense in the second quarter and did enough in the second half to come away with a 62-50 win over the Grizzlies.

Ty Vitko led the Green Wave (9-8) with 28 points, including a pair of 3-pointers and a 10-for-11 performance at the free throw line. Kingsley Breen added 12 points before fouling out late and Sam Krick was also in double figures with 10, including two 3s of his own.

"They grinded their way through it," Dover coach Matt Fennessy said. "Goffstown did a really nice job of putting us in (tough) positions, they do some nice thing. I thought we shared the ball well and we were able to do somethings defensively in the first half. They made some nice adjustments and we had to fight."

Dover responded to Goffstown's opening run with a 7-0 run to tie the game and it remained tied at 13 going into the second quarter. After Clay Campbell hit a 3 for the Grizzlies (6-10) to open the quarter, the Green Wave outscored them 17-5 the rest of the way to lead 30-21 at halftime.

"We threw a couple of different things at them," Vitko said. "Guys came in and worked hard on the defensive end. We got steals, got in transition and we didn’t let them get set up in what they wanted. It worked toward our favor."

Connor Hujsak led Goffstown with 14 points, hitting two 3-pointers in the first half, while William Kennedy added 10 points, including two 3s, and John Kelly had eight points, despite sitting most of the first half in foul trouble.

"We needed someone else to step up and do some scoring," Goffstown coach Ryan Cowette said. "We put a lot on Connor’s shoulders and he’s a great player, works as hard as he can. But we needed to find someone to get a few more baskets more consistently down the stretch."

Vitko scored on Dover's first possession of the second half to give the Green Wave their largest lead to that point, 32-21, but Goffstown was able to battle back, going on a 7-2 run to make it a 36-30 game with 4:35 to go in the third.

Dover answered with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer by Vitko to back up 11 points, but a basket by Goffstown's Jonathan Mpoyo at the end of the quarter helped make it an eight-point game going into the fourth.

But Krick opened the quarter with a 3-pointer to give Dover a double-digit cushion. Goffstown was able to cut the lead down to seven points twice in the fourth, but couldn't get any closer.

"(Krick) had messed up a play at the end of the third and he started the fourth with a 3, so hopefully that’s good for his confidence," Fennessy said. "I thought Ty played really well and we got contributions from a couple of people.

"We talked that this is a seeding game. You go on the road, you’ve got to be able to play in tough environments. We’re just trying to work on getting better at what we do. That’s the biggest piece at this point of the year."
