CONCORD - As she surveyed her options in the second overtime frame, Concord High School girls lacrosse player Erin Doherty felt a rush of adrenaline.

Utilizing that spark, Doherty found an opening in the Merrimack defense and ripped a rifle of a shot to score the game-winning goal for the Crimson Tide on Thursday in their 9-8 Division I victory over the Tomahawks at Memorial Field.

“I was like, ‘You know what? I’m just going to go for it and give it my all,’ and it worked out,” Doherty said. “I was very nervous but I kind of tried to push it aside and just go for the goal.”

Doherty’s game-winner, which marked her team-high third goal of the game, came with 2:07 left in the three-minute second overtime frame. Concord gained possession 31 seconds earlier following goalie Teylor Greene’s save on a free-position shot by Merrimack’s Mel Hutchinson.

Thursday’s win marked Concord’s first overtime game of the season and improved the team to 4-6.

Merrimack (6-5), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped Thursday, scored at least nine goals in eight of its previous 10 games.

Greene finished with 12 saves for the Crimson Tide.

Concord first-year coach Amanda Bacher said her players slid and double-teamed well defensively, which are two areas the team has been working on in practice.

“The word I’ve been using is stifling,” Bacher said. “Our defense needs to be stifling ... Every single game we’ve been getting better and better at defense. I’m all about defense so I’ve really been instilling that into our girls every single practice and (Thursday) it just showed.”

Concord’s Mary Martinson, Grace Leonard and Ananya Nadeau scored the final three goals of the first half over the last 1:44 to give the Crimson Tide a 6-2 halftime lead. Concord built a 3-1 advantage on two goals from Doherty and another from Nicole Toler before the Tomahawks trimmed its lead to 3-2 with 7:34 left in the first half.

“I think before the game, we started out more fired up than we have been in past games and when we went out there, we were ready to go, we were confident and it showed,” Doherty said.

Merrimack opened the second half on a 3-0 run and tied the game at 7-7 on Hutchinson’s second tally, which came with 9:05 left in regulation. Hutchinson’s team-high third and final goal of the game knotted the score at 8-8 with 8:33 left in the second half.

The Tomahawks had possession with 1:05 remaining in regulation before Doherty scooped up a ground ball with 35 seconds left.

“I told them (the players) not to let up going into the second half - that Merrimack was going to come back fighting and they did,” Bacher said. “They scored the first few goals of the second half. I called a timeout. I said, ‘Listen, we need to step it up. We need to go back to what we were doing in the first half. We need to start running our plays - not forcing - and we need to shut the door every time they break into the (8-meter).’ And they answered that call.”

Alongside Hutchinson’s hat trick, Merrimack received two goals each from Amber Brewster and Ellie Boucher and one from Katie Cota. Kaeleigh Leone made eight saves for the Tomahawks. Hutchinson also recorded a game-high seven draw controls and six ground balls.

Martinson and Toler both finished with two goals for the Crimson Tide.

“Our girls deserve this,” Bacher said. “They’ve been working hard all season. This has been a bit of a growing year and I’m so proud of how far they’ve come.”
