A quick look at some of the holiday basketball tournaments

The end of the calendar year means that the high school holiday tournaments are growing near. Here is an quick look at where some of the local boys and girls basketball teams will be playing, including the Chick-Fil-A Holiday (Boys) Basketball Tournament and the Nashua (Girls) Holiday Tournament.
This year’s Chick-Fil-A Tournament begins on Dec. 28 and features the same eight teams that participated in the 2009 tournament. Rumor is that Milford unsuccessfully tried to get into this year’s tourney, but will be on the schedule for next year.
All games are played at Nashua North, starting with a 3 p.m. tip-off between Campbell and Moore Catholic, from Staten Island, N.Y., on Tuesday. Hollis/Brookline and Thornton Academy, from Portland, Maine, follow at 4:30 p.m. Nashua South will take on Alvirne at 6 p.m. and Nashua North will face Bedford at 7:30 p.m.
Play continues on Dec. 29, starting at 3 p.m., and concludes on Dec. 30, with the championship game slated for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. For more, go to the tournament website.
Merrimack will again participate in the Queen City Invitational in Manchester. The tournament begins on Dec. 26 at 3 p.m., when the Tomahawks will take on Exeter at Manchester Memorial High School. Bow and Dover follow at 4:30 and Manchester West and Manchester Central play at 6. Trinity and Manchester Memorial finish off the first day at 7:30 p.m.
The tournament runs through Dec. 28, with games starting at 3 p.m. each day.
Milford and Souhegan are again participating in the Cheshire Tire Holiday Festival, hosted by Keene State College. The tournament begins on Dec. 26, but the Spartans and Sabers don’t begin until Dec. 27. Milford will take on Smithfield (R.I.) on Tuesday at 4 p.m., followed by Windham and Coe-Brown at 5:30 p.m. Souhegan will take on Lebanon at 7 p.m. and Conant and Keene end the day at 8:30 p.m.
Games start at 10 a.m. on Dec. 28 and 29, with the championship games scheduled for 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Bishop Guertin is heading down to Chelsea High School for the Stop & Shop Holiday Classic. The Cardinals begin the tournament on Dec. 27 with a 1 p.m. tip-off against Windsor (Conn.).
Wilton-Lyndeborough will take part in the Farmington “Mike Lee” Holiday Basketball Bash. The tournament begins on Dec. 26 and the Warriors open against Goffstown at 5:30 p.m., and W-L returns to play Pittsfield at 5:40 p.m. on Monday and Inter-Lakes at 2:50 on Tuesday. The championship game is scheduled for Dec. 30.
The Nashua Holiday Tournament expanded to 16 teams this year, and will be played at both Nashua South and Rivier College. The tournament begins on Dec. 27 and finishes up with the championship game at Rivier on Dec. 30. Both North and South are participating, along with Bishop Guertin, Bedford, Souhegan, Milford, Alvirne and Merrimack. Play begins at 3 p.m. at both Nashua South and Rivier on Dec. 27.
