That group showed just how they can do it Saturday against Winnacunnet. After a slow start that saw the Warriors grab the early lead, Derryfield's seniors stepped up, and with plenty of support from the underclassmen, rolled to an 11-5 win over Winnacunnet. It was the first meeting between the two programs, which finished as the runner-up in Division III and Division II, respectively, in 2019. "This was the best game we played all season," Derryfield coach Mellisa Catenza said. "I knew they were going to challenge us because (Winnacunnet) always challenges the D1 schools. I said we have to play lights out. We can’t get better unless we play teams that are better than us." Lucy Licata led the way for the Cougars (5-0) on offense, scoring eight goals, including a run of six in a row that spanned each half. Casey Benson recorded four assists for Derryfield and Abbey Carr added two goals and an assist while Lily Handwerk also scored. Shawna Lesmerises made seven saves and forced a handful of turnovers by the Warriors (2-4) while Lauren MacLean and Leah Hoey also played well on the defensive end. Winnacunnet got two goals and an assist from Serena Kollmorgen while Julia Edgar, Palen Kelly and Anna Carlino added a goal apiece. Lainey Parrott made nine saves for the Warriors, who trailed 7-4 at halftime but went scoreless until the final two minutes of the second half. "We’re disappointed in the sense that (Saturday) was supposed to be about us and the things that we’ve worked on in the last week, and I don’t think we executed that," Winnacunnet coach Colleen Farias said. "It’s an overall focus on us and what we bring at game time, and making sure we bring what’s at practice. There’s that definite difference there as to how they’ve played in practice and showing up for game day." The Warriors had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Cougars tied the game up quickly each time, including Licata's first goal of the game with 11:25 left in the first half. The senior added her second goal just 18 seconds later, giving Derryfield a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Handwerk scored a little more than a minute later, and Licata added two more goals just 1:09 apart to give the Cougars a 6-2 lead. "(Licata and Lesmerises) are two outstanding captains who have really stepped it up and bonded with this team," Catenza said. "Lauren MacLean is playing outstanding on defense. She’s playing better and better and lights out right now. I have 10 freshmen, which is amazing, and a handful of sophomores. They’re so athletic and willing to learn, and that’s been really great." Up three goals at halftime, Licata made it four just 20 seconds into the second half, winning the draw and scoring. Her seventh and eighth goals came 1:25 apart and put the Cougars up 10-4 with 12:48 remaining. "No one else was scoring for them, so it’s just one person," Farais said. "She happened to be on and we didn’t seem to connect. I don’t know that we pushed her on defense." Winnacunnet took a timeout after Licata's final goal and was able to get more opportunities on offense, but Lesmerises was able to make a couple of saves and Derryfield's defense forced a couple of turnovers down the stretch. Both teams are scheduled to host games at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with Winnacunnet welcoming Goffstown and Derryfield facing Hanover.
