MANCHESTER - With the number of opportunities the Derryfield School field hockey team had in the second half of Tuesday's game against Kennett High School, it felt like only a matter of time before the Cougars did what no one else had done so far this season.

Sure enough, with just under eight minutes to play in regulation, Derryfield finally put a goal past the Eagles' defense, the first allowed by Kennett in six-plus games this year. And it took a little more than nine minutes for the Cougars to do it again.

After getting 10 penalty corners in the second half, Derryfield got another one to start overtime and Lindsey Stagg ended the game when her shot was deflected by a Kennett defender just under the cross bar for a 2-1 win in a Division II contest.

Stagg finished with a goal and an assist, as her shot with 7:56 to go in the second half was redirected by Kira Geddes to tie the game at 1\. The tying score game after Derryfield (8-0) had spent the majority of the half in Kennett's end.

"I said to them at halftime that I would be more worried as a coach if we weren’t creating the chances, but we were," Derryfield coach Lenny McCaigue said. "You’ve just got to put one in the net and let’s see how (Kennett) reacts because they haven’t been scored on this year.

"Our girls knew they were playing well and they knew that if they just kept working at it, they would get an opportunity to score."

Kennett coach Cassie Johansen knew the same thing.

"They were down there for 22 minutes," she said. "If we didn’t have our defense, it would have been a completely different game. They are a brick house back there and they hold it together. It was bound to happen that they were going to get a goal to tie it up."

For a while, it looked as if the Eagles (6-1) weren't going to budge. Derryfield had seven corners in the first 10 minutes of the second half and goalie Hannah Frittenburg (14 saves), along with defenders Eva Drummond, Maddie Stewart, Ella Chandler and Josie Phaneuf, kept the Cougars from scoring.

"We played defensively really well," Johansen said. "In field hockey, it’s always that one shot, and we just played with a defensive mindset (Tuesday) instead of with an offensive mindset, which we do every time we play them."

While play was in the midfield more in the first half, Kennett took advantage of its best opportunity of the day, as Natalie Shaw converted a pass from Stewart to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead with 8:27 left in the first half.

"They had that one breakaway in the first half and they scored," McCaigue said. "I’m pleased that the girls never gave up and they kept their composure and they kept playing. We created a lot of opportunities."

The Cougars finished with 15 corners while the Eagles had none and made their only shot on goal count.

Derryfield got the first possession of overtime, and after making an initial rush to the goal, it looked like Kennett would clear it out. But the ball went out of bounds and the Cougars quickly got it back into the circle, setting up the corner.

Stagg let the entry pass from Charlotte Rohlfs go by her to Charlotte Gleichauf, who passed to back into the circle to Stagg. With two defenders in position to her right, Stagg hit a reverse shot that hit a stick and hit the net just beyond the crossbar hard enough that it popped right back out.

"The overtime winner was beautiful," McCaigue said. "It was a rocket shot. It was a good goal to win it."
