PLYMOUTH - Rosie Blake felt some nerves as she lined up to take a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter of Thursday's Division II field hockey playoff game.

The Derryfield School freshman took a moment to remind herself there was no place she'd rather be and made the stroke to send the game with Plymouth to overtime.

After two scoreless extra frames, Blake found herself again at the stroke line, with a chance to end the game, and again, she fought off any nerves to make it happen. Her successful attempt gave No. 10 Derryfield a 3-1 win in the shootout, and a 2-1 win over No. 7 Plymouth in the D2 preliminary round.

The Cougars (8-9) move on to face No. 2 Bow on the road at 2 p.m. Sunday in the quarterfinals.

"I was just calming my nerves and trying to remember that pressure is a privilege and how excited I am to be here," Blake said. "Yeah, there was pressure, but I just tried to block it out."

Blake's stroke with 4:36 left in regulation tied the game, while she and teammate Ava Kosakowski both made their attempts in the shootout to give Derryfield a 2-0 lead.

Plymouth's Lexi Joyce made her attempt to cut it to 2-1 through three rounds, and after an unsuccessful fourth round, Derryfield's Izzy Mailloux was tripped by goalie Carmen Donis on the final attempt, setting up the stroke. Again, Blake did her best to block out her nerves and made the shot.

"She was very nervous before the game," Derryfield coach Katie Kithcart-Bulk said. "We had a talk after the first quarter because she wasn’t quite playing like herself. I said don’t put so much pressure on yourself. Just play your game, do what you know how to do, and let everything else fall where it may.

"She was the right person for both of those strokes. The whole team trusts her in those high-pressure moments and she can deliver."

Cougars goalie Lexi Maiorino also turned in a big performance, keeping it a one-goal game after the Bobcats (10-7) took the lead late in the first quarter. The sophomore also helped Derryfield defend six penalty corners in the two overtimes.

"Our defense did an incredible job," Kithcart-Bulk said. "We some important adjustments over the last couple of days and they really put that into work. That shows how adaptable they are, how they’re like little sponges. They want to do everything they can for the person that’s next to them on the field. I’m so proud of our defense."

Amelia Avery had the goal for the Bobcats, as she scored off an assist from Joyce with 3:41 to go in the first quarter. The score came on Plymouth's first penalty corner of the day, after the Bobcats had already stopped a couple of attempts by Derryfield.

"Derryfield came out and had corners right off the bat, and the defense has to hold them," Plymouth coach Ashley Laufenberg said. "The moment we got that break, we took advantage of it. You never know how many opportunities you’re going to have."

Neither team had many in the second half, as much of the play stayed in the midfield.

Donis came up with a pair of saves on a Derryfield corner with about three minutes remaining in the third. Plymouth got downfield quickly to get a chance of its own after that, but Maiorino made a pair of stops to keep it a 1-0 game.

Derryfield got another corner with about five minutes left in regulation and was awarded a stroke on the play. Blake sent the ball to her left and it hit off the back post of the cage to tie the game.

"One thing I take a lot of pride in with our team is how we always support each other," Blake said. "Constantly giving each other support, working together, and keeping a positive mindset. It’s definitely what helped."
