MANCHESTER - Chris Hettler thought the defense of the Derryfield School boys lacrosse team might be key heading into Wednesday's showdown with Dover.

The Cougars spent extra time in practice over the last week preparing ways to slow down a Green Wave offense that was averaging more than 14 goals per game this season.

Through the first 12 minutes, that extra work paid off.

While Dover controlled possession for long stretches of the first quarter, Derryfield's defense held, and the Cougars broke open a tie game with a 5-0 run to start the second quarter on the way to a 17-5 win a matchup of two undefeated teams in Division II.

"Coming into the game, I was not expecting that, but I was hoping for that, to be able to come out and match their physicality, match their speed," Hettler said. "We spent a lot of time practicing defense throughout the week because we thought was going to be key. When we got the ball, we’d be able to generate enough shots to get quality looks to get a lead."

Connor Glosner led Derryfield (12-0) with five goals and an assist and Jon Maclean had four goals and four assists while John Anderson had four assists and was strong on faceoffs, including winning the first five of the second quarter and seven of nine overall in the frame.

"Early on, John in the faceoff circle was huge," Hettler said. "We asked him to take a lot of faceoffs and he was on the field for a long time. Then our wing play stepped up. Coming in, faceoff play and the defensive end was going to be the key."

Gunner Salvatore also had three goals for the Cougars and Robbie Dowst had two scores while Eric Mayer (assist), Max Horton and Alex Neville also had a goal apiece. Avry Truex made 12 saves.

Cam Lent had two goals for Dover (8-1) while Justin Colizzi, Andrew Housley and Ian Krouse had a goal apiece. Dom Silverio and Sean Gallipo had an assist each and Noah Schwartz made nine saves.

"We didn’t live up to our standard of play," Dover coach John Silverio said. "I thought the game started well for us. We got some possessions on our offensive end, we got some great looks at the net, we got a few in. The ball was moving around. Then the second quarter started and ... they were getting goals and we weren’t getting faceoffs. I don’t think we touched the ball more than a couple of times in that second quarter. It was hard."

The teams traded goals early in the game, with Senatore giving Derryfield a 1-0 lead 3:01 into the first and Krouse answered 41 seconds later. It remained tied for most of the quarter, with Dover putting a lot of pressure on the Cougars' defense.

The Green Wave had 11 shots in the quarter, including one off a turnover in front of the Derryfield goal. Colizzi beat Truex with a high shot, but it hit the crossbar and bounced away.

Dover did take the lead moments later. With Derryfield a man-down, the Green Wave ran a hidden-ball play from behind the cage, with Gallipo and Ryan Long standing next to each other with their backs to the field. Gallipo ran out with the ball and found Colizzi in front for a goal to make it 2-1 with 1:18 to go in the first.

Derryfield answered with a highlight-reel play of its own, as Maclean got the ball out front with his back to the goal and time running out in the quarter. Rather than make a move, he flipped the ball over his shoulder and into the back of the net to make it 2-2 with 29 seconds to go.

Glosner got his first goal with 10:17 left in the second quarter, as Derryfield scored five goals in three minutes to take a 7-2 lead. The final two goals on the run, from Dowst and Maclean, came just 10 seconds apart and led to a Dover timeout.

"It energized the whole team it felt like," Hettler said of the run. "We got the legs to do it, we’re going to play fast, and that’s the big thing. We wanted to play fast on the big field and we were able to get out in transition."

Lent scored out of the time out to make it 7-3, but Derryfield tacked on two more goals before the end of the half to take a 9-3 lead at the break.

For Dover, it's the first regular-season loss in almost two years and the most goals allowed in a game since ending the 2016 regular season with a 19-6 loss to Bedford.

"They were getting a lot of nice looks at our cage," Silverio said. "I thought our defense would have matched up a little better, but they were getting so many shots and getting the faceoffs, I think they wore our defense out. We cleared the ball well and we stayed out of the penalty box.

"I’m not going to get upset at them for the way they played. You lost to an extremely good team, what are you going to do? You have to decide how you want the season to end and that starts (Thursday) in practice."
