MANCHESTER - When the Derryfield School boys lacrosse team got the ball rolling in the first quarter Friday against Keene, there was no stopping the Cougars.

One goal led to another, and another, and another, and while the Blackbirds were able to keep things relatively in check the rest of the way, the damage was already done.

Derryfield jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game's first 12 minutes, including a run of four goals in two minutes, and never looked back in a 16-1 win over Keene in Division II action.

Eric Mayer led the way for the Cougars (7-0) with four goals and two assists as 10 different players scored for Derryfield. Connor Glosner had two goals and an assist while Robbie Dowst had a goal and two assists and John Anderson and Brian Schwab had a goal and an assist each.

Also scoring for Derryfield were Gunnar Senatore, Jon Maclean, Will Mancini, Alex Neville and Max Horton. Andrew Dubreuil had an assist and Avry Truex had 13 saves.

"It was one of our best games yet in terms of execution," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "We didn’t turn the ball over a lot, we were running our set plays real well. We knew we were catching these guys on the second day of a back-to-back, so the game plan was to come out and control the faceoffs and push the tempo, see if they could keep up."

Keene (2-4), which came back to beat Bow on Thursday, looked like it might be able to hang with the Cougars early in the game, keeping Derryfield off the board on its first two possessions. But Glosner scored with 8:42 left in the first to make it 1-0, Dowst followed with a goal a little more than a minute later, and Glosner scored again for a 3-0 lead with 5:50 remaining.

Two goals in six seconds, the second of which came right off a faceoff win by Anderson, made it 5-0 with 4:36 to go in the quarter.

"We started off loose, we got tighter after the first, a little tighter after the second, and it added up," Keene coach Griffin Kiritsy said. "We’ve seen these guys every year for the last five or six and they are always tough defensively. They’ve got guys at midfield and attack who can basically go by anybody. I think we were a little starstruck to start."

Zach Jankowski had the lone goal for Keene while Ben Burdett made five saves in goal. Spencer Pitts did well on faceoffs for the Blackbirds, particularly in the first quarter, but Keene wasn't able to get anything to show for it.

"I’ve got to give their (faceoff) kid, Spencer, credit, he played hard all game long," Hettler said.

In the second quarter, the Blackbirds made adjustments defensively and held the Cougars off the board for the first seven minutes of the quarter.

"We talked in between the quarters just winning one-on-ones in the defensive end," Kiritsy said. "We were going a little too early on our slides. Guys were out of sorts with their motion and we just got back to basics. I said we’re not going to go that early, we’re going to hold a little bit and it ended up working out."

Senatore broke through for Derryfield with 4:57 left in the first half and the Cougars pushed the lead to 10-0 at halftime.

"We were able to get two or three at the end there and stretch it to 10 (goals) at the half," Hettler said. "We’ve been doing this in the second quarter, where we get out to a lead and then have a lull. We haven’t played real well, but their defense did play well in that quarter."
