MANCHESTER - The Derryfield School boys lacrosse team went Friday's game against Windham hoping that its young defense could stop an offense that was flying high this season.

After seeing some big momentum swings by opponents in the second half, the Cougars showed their heading in the right direction against the Jaguars.

Derryfield allowed just one goal over the final 34 minutes of the game and the offense did its part, as the Cougars handed Windham its first loss of the year, 13-5, in a Division II contest. The goal total for the Jaguars was well below the 16 goals they'd averaged heading into the game and was eight below their previous low.

"It's an evolving defense," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "We’re young on defense and we have to learn to make stops. I think we took a step in the right direction (Friday) in a big game. It’s something, unfortunately, we didn’t do against Timberlane (in a 10-9 loss). As much as it stinks to lose, I think we learned from that and we took steps to limit those momentum swings."

The Cougars (6-1, No. 6 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) got four goals and an assist from Alex Murray while Take Flint had two goals and two assists and RJ Proulx and Quinn Silvio had two goals and an assist apiece.

Chili Cabot also scored twice for Derryfield and Liam Canty added a goal while John Kremer had three assists. Parker Lebiedz made eight saves for the Cougars, leading the defense to a big second-half performance.

"We challenged our defense before the game," Hettler said. "We said this is going to be one of the best offenses we’ve seen, and I know the score doesn’t reflect that, but they have a lot of good players out there and the defense really responded. Our goalie, Parker, made some incredible saves. That’s a team that is putting up double-digit points every single game."

The main focus for Derryfield was shutting down Windham's Alex Ryan. While the senior finished with three goals, they all came in the first quarter before the Cougars settled in defensively.

"We were really focused on shutting down Alex Ryan," Derryfield defender Dugan Brewer-Little said. "Just focusing on having good one and two slides, because we knew they’d run a lot of swing plays, trying to get him open. We had to make sure that if we slid to him, we had good backup.

"I think the key to our success in the second quarter and the second half was mostly due to our one slides, really having those locked in. His first two goals, he kind of got a little bit of space and just ripped it. Having the one slides helped a lot."

The teams traded goals early, with Ryan putting Windham (6-1, No. 8) up 2-1 with back-to-back goals just 1:45 apart. Derryfield answered with goals from Flint and Cabot to go up 3-2 and the Cougars carried a 5-3 lead into the second.

Blake Bazin scored for the Jaguars less than two minutes into the frame to make it 5-4, but the Cougars kept Windham off the board for the rets of the half. Silvio and Cabot scored in the final six minutes of the half to take a 7-4 lead into the break.

Derryfield steadily built the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Windham 4-0 in the frame to take an 11-4 lead.

"They couldn’t have played much better," Hettler said. "We had a lot to do on the clearing game. Anybody who watched the game (Friday) saw us struggle clearing. We gave up way too many opportunities. I think if we had had those things a little more on point, it could have been an even better day for us."
