MANCHESTER - It had only been eight days since the Derryfield School boys lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season against Oyster River-Newmarket.

With the result of that game having no weight on the final Division II standings, both teams played a flat through what ended up as a Cougars' win.

No. 1 Derryfield knew that had to change if it was going to keep its season going, and after giving up the game's first goal Saturday, the Cougars outscored the No. 8 Bobcats 10-1 over the remainder of the first half on the way to a 14-8 win over Oyster River-Newmarket in the D2 quarterfinals.

The win puts the Cougars in the D2 semifinals for the 10th season in a row, as they'll take on No. 5 St. Thomas, which beat No. 4 Hollis Brookline in the quarterfinals, at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Bedford High School.

"Very different energy than the first time around," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "The guys knew if we came out flat again, it was going to be difficult, and then they scored the first goal. They then settled in and played really well."

Brady Doldo led Derryfield (18-0) with five goals, including a manup pole goal off a faceoff early in the second quarter, while Ryan Maxwell had two goals and three assists and RJ Proulx had two goals and an assist.

Garrett Lande and Heath Mueller also scored two goals apiece while Emerson Stover had a goal and an assist and Jackson Hatfield added an assist.

Liam England finished with six saves and Jaxon DeYoung had two stops while Hatfield and Dylan Clyne combined to win 18 of 24 faceoffs, including all eight in the second quarter.

Oyster River-Newmarket (9-8) scored the opening goal of both the first and the second, but after making it 5-2 early in the second, the Bobcats didn't see the ball much for the rest of the half.

"We scored the first goal, but we didn’t execute some of the parts of our defensive game plan," Oyster River-Newmarket coach Amani Mwingira said. "We’re playing man-to-man defense, we shook things up after halftime and I thought the kids adjusted pretty well. I’m really proud though. I think this program has come down here the past few years and gotten beat up and struggled."

The Bobcats held the Cougars to a goal in the third quarter, and eventually got the lead down to five goals late, but couldn't get any closer.

Jaydn Smart had three goals to lead Oyster River-Newmarket while Talon Beyer and Dee Tsakiris added two goals apiece. Alex Moody also scored and Cole Norris finished with 11 saves, most of them in the second half.

"We shot way better than we did the last time," Hettler said. "Cole Norris had a big game against us last time, and he got hotter as this game went on. I think we were like 5 for 6 shooting to open the game and it kind of made everyone settle into the game."

After the Bobcats scored to open the second quarter, Maxwell fought his way through a couple of defenders to get to the crease and scored while entangled with a long pole. Oyster River-Newmarket drew a flag on the play, leaving them a man down for the next faceoff, and Doldo, who was on the field as an LSM, scooped up the groundball and scored 11 seconds later.

"Brady had a huge game," Hettler said. "The offense was really efficient. We learned our lesson the first time. We weren’t just going to dodge by these guys. We had to look for secondary looks, some guys off ball, and they did a good job."
