WINDHAM - There probably haven't been many wins during the Derryfield School boys lacrosse team's run that looked like Tuesday's game against Windham.

Fortunately for the Cougars, appearances aren't really noted in the final score.

The Jaguars held Derryfield scoreless for a quarter, but the Cougars were able to do just enough on offense in the final three frames to come away with an 8-2 win over Windham in a Division II contest. The win is the 65th in a row for Derryfield, the longest active streak in the country and eighth-longest all-time.

"At the time, I didn’t feel like we played that well," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said of the scoreless first quarter. "I think if we look back on it, we adjusted to the style of game, the weather conditions. Our defense was playing really well and Windham was taking a lot of time off the clock."

Windham controlled possession for most of the opening 12 minutes, taking six shots while holding Derryfield to just three. It took the Cougars (12-0, No. 4 in the NHHSS Coaches Poll) another six-plus minutes to find the back of the net in the second quarter, as they took a 4-1 lead over the Jaguars (7-6, ARV) into halftime.

Jon MacLean, Alex Neville, Matt Weimer and Gunnar Senatore had two goals apiece for Derryfield and Avry Truex made five saves. Windham got a goal each from Jake Rust and Cody Potter while Bobby DiCicco made six saves.

But after the first quarter, the Jaguars struggled to maintain possession, as they turned the ball over 17 times in the final three quarters.

"Defensively, we did really well 80 percent of the time, we just had a couple of lapses," Windham coach Joe Young said. "Offensively, we were just stagnant. A lot of it is, you get in one kid’s stick, and you just watch him go, which is our MO the last couple of games.

"How many times did we throw it away? One was an offensive possession, manup, and we just threw it away. We stopped running our clear and started running off the hip, and it showed."

The Jagaurs held Derryfield to one goal in the third quarter, and with 21.5 seconds left in the frame, the Cougars were called for two fouls, giving Windham a two-man advantage going into the fourth.

While the Jaguars weren't able to score during the two-man up situation, Potter put a goal in right after to make it 5-2 with 10:09 left in the game. But Derryfield won the ensuing faceoff - just the Cougars' fourth win to that point - and MacLean found Senatore for a goal 37 seconds later to make it a four-goal game again.

"Let’s be happy going home with whatever victory we get," Hettler said of his message at halftime. "Our passes weren’t quite where they needed to be, guys were slipping all over the field. There were booted ground balls over the place. That’s a good, athletic team. I was impressed with their team speed."

Both teams return to action on Friday, as Windham travels to Hampton to face Winnacunnet at 4 p.m. and Derryfield hosts Exeter at 7 p.m.
