HOLLIS - With rain and wind forecasted throughout, there was only one point of emphasis Friday for the Derryfield School boys lacrosse team.

The Cougars just wanted to finish with one more goal than Hollis Brookline.

That's what Derryfield did, and then added one more for insurance, as the Cougars scored twice in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to break a tie, and then held on for a 7-5 win over the Cavaliers in a Division II game.

RJ Proulx had four goals to lead the Cougars (10-0, No. 5 in the MerchSquared.com/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) while Brady Doldo (three assists), Emerson Stover (two) and Dom Cercone (one) each had a goal in the fourth quarter.

"We kind of figured out early where it was going to be a day where we just had to have one more goal than they did," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "It was really hard to move the ball out there, so it was really not the style that we wanted to play. We really had to try to find ways to find space and get balls in the sticks of playmakers hands.

"Credit to their goalie (Levi Mitchell), he made some really good saves. He got himself hit with the ball a lot, and on a day like (Friday), it’s really hard to be accurate with your shots. He did a really good job. Credit to both teams for being out here in these conditions."

Mitchell finished with 13 saves, including six in the fourth quarter, to keep Derryfield from breaking the game open. But HB (7-3) struggled to clear the ball, turning it over eight times - five of them in transition - to help set up two of the Cougars' goals.

"That’s not what you expect," HB coach Mac Martin said of the team's trouble clearing. "We got into bad habits with one-man clears and guys get tired. Then those are a lot hard to come by.

"Levi played outstanding. First time he really truly stepped up and made a lot of saves that I would expect him to make. He kept us in that game throughout, especially in the second half. He’s worked very hard. I’m glad he was able to perform the way he did."

HB got a goal apiece from Bennett Torgersen (one assist), Noah Taylor, JP Torgersen, Vittorio Masoni and Sam Petrella. Mike O'Hearn also had an assist.

The Cavs got on the board first, but the Cougars answered, and it was a 1-1 game after one. Proulx gave Derryfield the lead three minutes into the second quarter and made it 3-1 with 1:09 left in the half.

Masoni got the lead back down to one on a goal with 8:14 left in the third quarter, but Proulx scored his fourth of the game for a 4-2 Derryfield lead just 23 seconds later.

"Trying to set him and other guys up in advantageous spots on the field," Hettler said. "On a day like (Friday), the offense has the advantage. You know where you’re going to go, you know when you’re going to jab step and roll. It wasn’t going to be a day where we were going to make three or four passes and hit guys off-ball."

The Cavs got two goals in 1:34 late in the third, tying the game on a score by Bennett Torgersen. HB won the ensuing faceoff and had a chance for the lead, but Liam England (10 saves) came up with a stop to keep it a tie game.

After Derryfield took a 6-4 lead early in the fourth, Taylor scored with three minutes to go to get HB back within one. The Cavs got the ball back off a turnover by the Cougars, but turned it right back over, setting up Stover's goal with 1:55 left.

"Fantastic game," Martin said. "That’s the type of close game you want to compete in. A lot of highs and lows, but completely different than what we’ve done in the past. Last year, it was a different game (when Derryfield won 20-5). The improvement is great to see."
