EXETER - The Derryfield School boys lacrosse team went into Saturday's Division II championship game against Winnacunnet believed it had a game plan that was going to work.

Even after a scoreless first quarter, the Cougars felt if they stuck to the plan, it was going to work, and it did.

No. 1 Derryfield scored four goals in a little less than five minutes in the second quarter to take the lead and the defense shut out No. 2 Winnacunnet until late in the fourth quarter to take a 9-1 win and the program's fourth D2 title in a row at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.

Jon MacLean led the Cougars (19-1, No. 4 in the NHHSS Coaches Poll) with three goals and three assists, as he scored twice in the third quarter to help put Derryfield up 6-0\. Chas Dean added a goal and three assists and Gunnar Senatore and John Anderson also had a goal and a helper apiece.

Max Horton, Alex Neville and Henry Howe also scored for Derryfield and Avry Truex made 12 saves, including five in the first quarter that helped keep Winnacunnet (14-4, No. 7) from taking an early lead.

"It’s how they should have gone out," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "They executed everything we wanted to do, even though the shots weren’t going (in the first quarter). It was everything we drew up. The shots were there, we just didn’t put them in the back of the net.

"I said guys we’re fine, just keep running it. They believed it, too. They saw the same things I saw and they wanted to keep running it."

Derryfield's Jon MacLean tries to get away from Winnacunnet's Louis Granger.

And the Cougars did, finally breaking through on Anderson's goal with 7:15 left in the first half. Senatore scored just 1:01 later to make it 2-0 and goals by MacLean and Dean just 39 seconds apart made it 4-0 with 2:50 remaining until halftime.

After both teams had opportunities in the first quarter, Derryfield started to control possession in the second and the Warriors started to struggle to keep the ball when they tried to get in transition.

"We had so many opportunities there and that’s the game we want to play, that transition game," Winnacunnet coach Patrick Snow said. "We relied on it all season and unfortunately, we didn’t have it. Sometimes that happens.

"The turnovers turn into offense for them. Maybe you’re gripping your stick a little tighter and once things start to slip away, it’s hard to reel it in. I would never question my guys’ effort. I thought they battled hard until the last whistle."

Tyler Hoar had the lone goal for the Warriors, as he scored with 3:17 left in the game to end the shutout, and Carter Renaud made seven saves, five of which came in the first quarter.

"He was an animal," Snow said of his goalie. "He was so good. He’s just so quiet, he’s a classic goalie. He’s only a sophomore and that’s a big stage for him. He looked ready in warmups and you saw it early in his play, but then we wore down a little bit."

Horton and Howe both scored in the first 1:16 of the fourth quarter to give Derryfield an 8-0 lead and Truex made a pair of saves early in the quarter to keep Winnacunnet from picking up any momentum.

"That’s probably the best defense I’ve seen this year and we saved it for the last game," MacLean said. "We started hitting our peak right at the end of the season and that’s what we needed to do."

Derryfield becomes just the third program in state history to win at least four titles in a row, joining Bishop Guertin (five, 2010-14) and Pinkerton (four each, 1994-97, 1999-2002). The single goal given up by the Cougars set a state record for fewest goals allowed in a championship game; the previous record had been two given up by Bedford in 2013.
