EXETER - When it was all over, Chris Hettler wasn't surprised Chili Cabot was the one who delivered the overtime goal in Sunday's Division II championship game.

With the Derryfield School and Portsmouth High School boys lacrosse teams tied halfway through the extra period, the ball was rolling around on the ground in front of the Clippers goal. And then all of a sudden, it wasn't.

Cabot, who had been the intended target of a pass from Ethan Flanagan, scooped up the groundball, moved around the scrum, and before anyone could react, fired a lefthanded shot toward the far side of the net.

The ball found its way inside the post, tickling the net, and the second-seeded Cougars piled on Cabot behind the goal, celebrating a 12-11 overtime victory against No. 1 Portsmouth at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.

"Chili has done that three or four times this season," Hettler said. "He’s just around the ball, he finds the right space, and he put in where he needed to put it in. Glad I didn’t call timeout there. We had said we’re going to let them play, but if there was a loose ball and we got it, we would, but he got it so fast, there was no time."

Not enough time to call a timeout, but enough time for Cabot to assess the situation.

"I was going to shoot it righty, but then they got off my hip a little bit, allowed me to put it in my left hand and I shot it far side," the junior said. I was like ‘all right this is it.’ I saw it go in. It was kind of like ‘oh did we just win?’ And then it’s like a little bit of shock. We won, so it’s huge."

Cabot scored the first and last goal of the game for Derryfield (19-1) while Quinn Silvio had three goals and two assists and Tate Flint had three goals and one assist. Alex Murray also scored three times, including the Cougars' last goal of regulation, which came with 4:23 left in the game and gave them a two-goal lead.

After a Portsmouth onslaught in the third quarter - the Clippers went on a 5-0 run to close a six-goal deficit to one - Derryfield's defense had pitched a shutout in the fourth to that point. But with under two minutes to play, and with Derryfield having to keep it inside the offensive zone, Murray was pushed out, giving Portsmouth the ball back with 1:37 to play.

Ben Purcell scored the last of his four goals 21 seconds later to make it 11-10, and after Nick Smith won the faceoff, Zac Amend potted his fourth goal to tie the game with 58.5 seconds remaining. Smith got the ensuing faceoff and Portsmouth held the ball for a final shot, but Derryfield goalie Parker Lebiedz made the save - his 11th of the game - to keep it tied.

"I thought we blew it, but we just made it interesting," Hettler said. "Definitely one to remember for a long time. An incredible effort by (Portsmouth). We had them on the ropes, and that’s the way they played all season, they don’t quit. I’m really proud of my guys. Parker made stops when we needed them. When we needed a stop, we go it."

RJ Proulx also had a goal and two assists for the Cougars and Flanagan added an assist. Purcell also had two assists and Amend had one, while Briggs Catino, Lucas Patten and Keigen Delisle each added a goal. Smith had three assists and was 20 of 26 on faceoffs, including 11 of 13 in the second to help the Clippers rally from 10-4 down with 6:41 left in the third.

"Keep grinding, keep playing," Portsmouth coach Chad Vischer said of his message to the team. "I think Nick had a much better faceoff performance in the second half. Hats off to Purvis, he was beating (Smith). We got one, then two, then three, and it was like ‘OK, now we’re in this thing.’ One-goal in overtime against a team that, on paper, I think is better than us. They’re a good team, they deserved to win."

Derryfield came out strong, getting goals from Cabot and Flint to take a quick 2-0 lead, and the Cougars maintained the lead throughout the first half, answering whenever the Clippers were able to get on the board.

Back-to-back goals by Silvio to end the first half gave Derryfield an 8-4 lead at the break.

"We tried to shut off (Silvio) in the second half," Vischer said. "He was having a lights-out day. I think we slowed him down in the second half because we sure as heck didn’t slow him down in the first half. He and Tate were great and we weren’t stopping that."

While Silvio didn't score in the second half, Murray and Flint did to open the third quarter, giving Derryfield a six-goal lead.

And then momentum started to swing.

Logan Purvis was called for a slash following the ensuing faceoff, and 30 seconds later, Amend scored. Smith won the next faceoff and quickly got it to Amend, who scored again just 15 seconds later to make it 10-6.

Another penalty on the faceoff, this time a hold on Purvis, gave Portsmouth another manup, and Amend scored again on the advantage. Another faceoff win by Smith led to another goal, this time by Catino, to give the Clippers a 4-0 run in 56 seconds.

"That was unexpected," Hettler said. "They’ve been fighting all season. We still had a lead, we just needed some stops. Maybe I should have taken a timeout earlier, but I believe in my guys."

Lebiedz came up with one on the next possession, making a save, and the Cougars were able to hold off the Clippers until Proulx was sent off for a slash with 2:47 left in the third. With the manup winding down, Delisle took a shot from far out that wasn't going to be on goal, but the ball hit Flanagan in front and deflected in to make it 10-9 Derryfield.

But that was all the damage Portsmouth would do until late in the fourth quarter, despite having possession for most of the first seven minutes of the final frame.

Smith gave the Clippers possession first in the overtime, but Amend was called for an over-and-back when he lost track of where he was on the field and stepped over the midline. Flanagan held the ball near the top of the box, letting Derryfield set up on offense before the final goal by Cabot.

"Right place, right time," Hettler said. "Incredible IQ. Makes the most of his athleticism and makes up for what he doesn’t have with lacrosse savvy."
