MANCHESTER - A year ago, the Timberlane Regional High School boys lacrosse team surprised Derryfield by coming from behind to grab a win on the Cougars' home turf.

On Tuesday, it was Derryfield's turn to surprise the Owls, and the Cougars didn't wait until the end of the game to pull it.

Derryfield opened the game with three goals in the first four-plus minutes and six goals in the first 10, executing on offense while also taking advantage of Timberlane's miscues, on the way to a 17-2 win in a matchup of two of the top teams in Division II.

Chili Cabot had three of his game-high six goals in the first quarter, Alex Murray had four goals and an assist and RJ Proulx had a goal and four assists as the Cougars (11-0, No. 2 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) scored more than a dozen more goals than Timberlane's season average allowed.

"The first quarter, I don’t think we could have executed better as a team," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "We identified some matchups, and it wasn’t just beating a guy one-on-one, it was good off-ball movement. Our guys were able to make the extra pass and cut off ball. They stopped our primary looks but then we were able to find guys open."

Liam Canty also had a two goals and an assist and Quinn Silvio scored twice. John Kramer and Brady Doldo had a goal apiece while Tate Flint finished with an assist.

The Cougars scored on their first shot of the game, two of their first four and three of their first six; the Owls (8-2, No. 7) registered just five shots total in the first quarter to go with seven turnovers.

"We came here last year and we put a win on them at their house, and they were not expecting it," Timberlane coach Ken Blaszka said. "They were beyond prepared for us. They did their homework and their kids bought in to beating us. On top of the preparation, their execution was absolutely flawless in the first quarter."

Cole Gerry and Jake Hutchings each had a goal for Timberlane, with Hutchings being his first on varsity, and Braidon Bowman had an assist. Brady Marston made 10 saves, but often times Derryfield's shot placement was in the right spot.

Two of the Cougars' goals came off the ride, when a Timberlane defender turned to give the ball back to Marston and Cabot was there to intercept the pass and score.

"We had our opportunities in the beginning but then we just gave them the ball," Blaszka said. "You can’t give this team the ball."

Derryfield led 6-0 after one quarter, but Timberlane's defense held them in check for the first 10 minutes of the second before two goals in the final two minutes made it 8-1 going into halftime.

The defense stepped up again for the Owls to open the third quarter, as they held the Cougars off the board for more than six minutes, and got a manup goal from Gerry to make it 8-2\. Timberlane had another manup opportunity midway through the third, but after an initial shot was blocked, the Owls turned it over.

With the penalty expired, the Cougars got out in transition and Murray finished the break with a goal to make 9-2\. Derryfield did it again moments later, with Murray scoring with 4:07 to go in the third for a 10-2 lead.

"We made a stop, we got out in transition, we got one to get it to nine (goals) and we quickly scored 10 after that," Hettler said. "You could tell the flood gates were opening. I challenged the guys at halftime, what’s going to get them back in this game? Transition and manup. We had to make some stops."

For Timberlane, it felt like a risk had to be taken when an opportunity arose and that left the Owls exposed on the other end.

"You feel like a degenerate gambler where you’re betting the house, you’re betting the car," Blaszka said. "Oh I won on the dog, but then all of a sudden, lost all my wife’s clothes. I’m running out of things to bet.

"It’s like quicksand. We’re struggling to get out, we just keep sinking. It’s tough when those things happen."

The lead stretched to 14-2 late in the third quarter, putting the game into running time for the fourth.

Timberlane had a quick turnaround, with Dover coming to town for a 6 p.m. start on Wednesday, while Derryfield travels to Portsmouth for a 6:30 p.m. start on Thursday.
