The two-time defending Division II champion Cougars (14-0) had a 7-2 lead after the opening 12 minutes and a 8-4 advantage at halftime. Derryfield led by at least four and by as many as 11 goals in the second half, holding Division I Concord (3-11) to one tally in each of the final two quarters. Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said it took his team some time to get used to the nuances of Concord’s grass field. Once the Cougars settled in, they never looked back. Concord’s Brendan Pearl tied the score at 1-1 early in the first quarter before Connor Glosner answered with a goal of his own to put Derryfield ahead for good. Glosner’s tally sparked a 6-1 Cougars run. “I think it showed we’re a turf team in the early beginning,” Hettler said. “When the game is played on grass and things are getting slowed down, you can’t afford to throw it away and give good, Division I physical teams the extra possessions. “It just took us a little while to break it open there.” The Cougars scored at least four goals in every quarter except the second, which Concord coach Jeff Smith said was his team’s best frame of the contest. Glosner was the lone Derryfield player to find the back of the net in the second quarter. “That’s the team I want to show up all the time - dictate some possession time, give the (defense) a breather, especially when you’ve only got one or two subs,” Smith said. “I understand. ... It’s hard for them to maintain that level of play for four quarters. We have realistic expectations but still want them to grow.” Hettler was impressed by how the Crimson Tide cleared, something he said opponents can struggle with against Derryfield. Smith said clearing is something Concord has been working on throughout the season. “There’s always somebody open so it’s just getting your head up, making that pass under pressure and finding that open (man),” Smith said. “The last two, three games we’ve done that a bit but we’ve still got to do it better at that level.” Glosner and Jon Maclean both finished with five goals and an assist for Derryfield. Eric Mayer logged two goals and three assists and Gunnar Senatore, John Anderson, Alex Neville, Max Horton and Cam Bishop each scored once for the Cougars. Neville and Horton also scooped up six and five ground balls, respectively. Derryfield goalie Avry Truex made seven saves. Cougars freshman Connor O’Brien took every faceoff, winning 10 of 26. “We said, ‘You know what? Let’s throw (O’Brien) into the fire. Let’s see what he can do today,’” Hettler said. “And I thought he responded really well. ... That just bodes well for the future for us there.” Pearl and Eaton Tarbell both scored twice and Spencer Burgess and Noah Fye each added a goal for Concord. Jeffrey Emmons won 16 faceoffs and Jay Blasko made 10 saves for the Crimson Tide. “They’re as good as ever,” Smith said of the Cougars. “They’re well-coached. They execute. They force you to a speed that if you don’t match it, they’ll just take the game and kind of go with it.”
