HAMPTON - For the second straight game to start the season, the Derryfield School boys lacrosse team got out to a comfortable lead against a tough opponent.

And for the second straight game, the Cougars had to sweat it out until the final moments to keep their winning streak alive.

Derryfield led Winnacunnet by as many as five goals in the third quarter, but the Warriors outscored the Cougars 4-0 over the final 15 minutes, making it a one-goal game with 21 seconds remaining. In the end, Derryfield was able to hang on for a 9-8 win in Division II action, the Cougars' 55th win in a row.

Jon MacLean led Derryfield with four goals, three of which came in the third quarter as Derryfield built a 9-4 lead. Henry Howe added three goals for the Cougars (2-0, No. 4 in NHHSS Coaches Poll) and Matt Weimers had two goals.

Derryfield also got five saves from sophomore goalie Ryan Caperrelli, who was making his second start in place of an injured Avry Tuex, including one late that kept the Cougars in front.

"If you had told me that we were going to come into a week and lose a starting defenseman and a starting goaltender, and go 2-0 against two good teams, I’d have said you were nuts," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "Ryan Caperrelli stepped up this week and we had a new kid we put a pole in his hands in Will Mancini. Both those guys were huge.

"A little disappointed by our end-of-game situational awareness and being able to finish off a game. Overall, that’s a quality win in a tough place to play against a really good team that’s probably going to make a final four run. I’m proud of my guys."

Winnacunnet (0-2, ARV) got five goals from Jack Ellis, including the final one with 21 seconds to play, and two goals and an assist from Tyler Hoar. Josh Chase also had a goal and Carter Renaud made nine saves.

"Once again, the second half was huge for us," Winnacunnet coach Patrick Snow said. "We battled. We started getting the ball on some faceoffs, where we really struggled in the first half. We were able to come up with key possessions down the end. We got a couple of transition goals.

"Any time you can hold a team like that to a one-goal game, we’re thrilled with the effort. That’s good for the confidence, that they can hang with the best."

Derryfield jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but with 14 seconds left on the clock, the Warriors were able to go the length of the field and score, as Hoar found the back of the net with one second to go to make it 3-2.

Winnacunnet seemed poised to tie it early in the second quarter when the Cougars went down two men, but Derryfield killed off the penalties. Chase finally tied it at 3 with 8:16 left in the half, but Weimers, Howe and MacLean each scored in a span of 1:17 to give the Cougars a 6-3 lead with 2:46 to go until halftime.

MacLean tacked on two more goals in the first 2:57 of the third quarter to give Derryfield an 8-3 lead, and after Ellis made it 8-4, the senior added another goal for a 9-4 lead with 5:58 left in the third.

After that, Winnacunnet put long pole Joe MacDougall on MacLean to try to slow him down, and the move seemed to disrupt the Cougars' offense to some degree.

"It’s good to have him back and he’s a big difference maker, just by his stature alone," Snow said of the 6-5 MacDougall. "We were flipping in and out of a zone and into man, and we got mixed up in some of them on the matchups.

"We were able to markup well at the end of the game, and maybe in retrospect, I wish maybe we had switched early. You’ve got to do anything you can to slow a team like that down because they have so many guys who can put it in the back of the net."

Ellis scored with Winnacunnet a manup to make it 9-5 going into the fourth quarter and Hoar added another goal with a man advantage with 9:11 remaining to cut the lead to three.

Derryfield was able to eat up a lot of the clock after that, but after a turnover by the Cougars, Ellis got the ball behind the defense. Caparrelli came out of the crease to challenge, and knocked the ball away from Ellis, but the sophomore was able to swat the ball into the open net, making it 9-7 with 4:55 to play.

The Cougars got possession after Ellis's final goal made it 9-8, but turned it over with seven seconds left. The Warriors tried to heave the ball down field, but Max Horton picked off the pass and the clock ran out.

Derryfield puts its win streak on the line Monday, when it heads to Westwood (Mass.), while Winnacunnet hosts St. Thomas on Tuesday.
