NASHUA – Turnovers can be a big momentum changer in high school football.

Turnovers returned for touchdowns are a back breaker.

Nashua High School South returned two fumbles for touchdowns, including one for 101 yards, and got three touchdowns from Armond McRae Friday night to rout Londonderry 36-6 at Stellos Stadium.

Ray Ramos returned a fumble 78 yards in the first quarter to put the Panthers up 6-0 early, and Shawn DeCost scooped up a loose ball in the South end zone and raced the length of the field for the Panthers’ final points of the night.

“Those are good to get,” South coach Scott Knight said. “We’re jelling at the right time.”

McRae once again led the offense, picking 202 total yards of offense and three touchdowns on 18 touches. One of those touchdowns was a 47-yard pass play from quarterback Trevor Knight, who finished 7 of 12 for 114 yards.

Sean O’Gorman led Londonderry (0-6 in Division I ) with 158 yards rushing and a touchdown, but it was his two fumbles that led to South’s long touchdown returns.

South looked like it was going to get on the board quick, taking the opening kickoff and moving to the Londonderry 17-yard line. But on third-and-8, Trevor Knight’s pass Ramos went through the receiver’s hands and right to Vinny Parilla for an interception.

“We’d been deferring every week and we said let’s go down and score,” Scott Knight said. “Everything was going well and then boom.”

On the next play, O’Gorman ripped off a 49-yard run to give the Lancers a first down at the South 29\. After two runs by Adam Alix, O’Gorman ran off tackle, and when he was hit, the ball popped into the air. Ramos grabbed the ball out of the air and went untouched to the end zone for a 6-0 South lead.

The score stayed that way until midway through the second quarter, when McRae scored on a 38-yard run and on a 47-yard catch-and-run from Trevor Knight, sandwiched around a touchdown by O’Gorman to make it 20-6 at halftime.

The teams traded long drives to open the second half, with South’s ending at Londonderry’s 8-yard line after a lost fumble by Trevor Knight. The sophomore quarterback suffered a contusion on his arm and didn’t return to the game, although Scott Knight said he could have been able to play if needed.

Londonderry went three-and-out after the fumble and Dylan Cole’s punt was blocked by Bobby Manganello. The ball ricocheted toward the end zone and bounced out of bounds for a safety that put South up 22-6 with 3:44 left in the third quarter.

The Panthers got the ball back near midfield on the free kick and needed just five plays to get in the end zone, as McRae ran in from 7 yards out for a 29-6 lead.

The Lancers looked like they might get back into the game, driving 79 yards in 10 plays down to the South 1-yard line. But the Lancers lost two yards on two plays from 1, and on third down, Demetrious Hoggard was stopped inches from the goal line by South’s Josh Castro.

On fourth-and-1 from the 1, O’Gorman fumbled as he went into the end zone and DeCost scooped the ball up a yard deep and outran everyone in the other direction.

“That was a big stop by Castro at the goal line and then an alert scoop by DeCost,” Scott Knight said. “It was a pretty alert play and he’s flat-out fast.”

South lineman Julier Rivera sprained an ankle on the play, and defensive tackle Brandon Dubray was limited because of a previous ankle injury. Add those to contusion for Trevor Knight and Joseph Haftel, and the Panthers might appear to be a little banged up as they head to Salem next week.

“These are the games you’ve got to get through healthy and to play well and play better than we have,” Knight said. “Some of our phases, we played better tonight. We did some things well.”
