After Wednesday night's Division II semifinal, the Marauders have chance to continue writing. No. 4 Hanover withstood a dominant first half by No. 1 Kennett, and got the game's only goal off a penalty corner midway through the second half, to knock off the undefeated Eagles 1-0 at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter. The win sends the Marauders (12-2-1) to the final for the second year in a row - they lost to Windham last season - where they will face No. 2 Derryfield at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Bedford High School. "The girls say it all," Hanover coach Jean Essex said. "They’re rewriting history and that was their goal this year. It started last year at the final, and we’re back to where we were last year. "They played their heats out. We played a two-and-a-half hour quarterfinal against Plymouth and went into triple overtime basically. I think that sort of inspired them, it gave them the mental wherewithal to dig deep and finish it off, stay strong mentally and physically." After helping to keep Kennett (15-1) off the scoreboard, Lois Schwarz scored off a feed from Macy Curtis with 17:29 left in the game to give Hanover the only goal it would need. It was just one of two shots for the Marauders, who had all four of their corners in the second half. "Macy (Curtis), she’s at the top of the circle and makes the decision," Schwarz said. "She sees how the defense is playing her. For that goal, she saw the defense wasn’t covering me, so she passed it over and it went in." Ella Edmunds earned the shutout by making seven saves, including two late in the first half and early in the second that seemed to swing some momentum Hanover's way. "They definitely dominated the game in the first half, but I think that we had something to prove," Schwarz said. "We really came out in the second half and I’m sure we got a run going and built up the momentum." Kennett had a chance to tie the game not long after the goal, as the Eagles got a corner with about 16 minutes remaining. After putting the ball in play, Ashton Coleman got it back next to the goal and sent a pass across to the other side, but Liz Koroski couldn't control it and Edmunds knocked the ball away. The Eagles had a great chance with about 10 seconds to play, but a shot by Kathryn Hawkes went wide of the goal and Hanover celebrated moments later. "It’s a long time when you score and you’re up," Schwarz said. "It’s tough to get everyone to play calmly and patiently. But our team has been playing together for a while, so we were able to control ourselves and keep it all mental." The final will be the second meeting of the season for Hanover and Derryfield, as they played to a scoreless tie on Sept. 21 in Manchester.
