NASHUA - The Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team has a group chat where the Cardinals discuss different things about the season.

One topic of conversation for a while was how they were going to defend Bedford's offense when the teams met in the regular season.

That moment came Tuesday night, and went about as well as the Cardinals could have hoped.

After allowing two scores in the first quarter, Bishop Guertin held the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the way, while the offense continued putting up goals in the second and third quarter on the way to a 15-2 win in a Division I matchup at Stellos Stadium.

Owen King had two goals and five assists for the Cardinals (7-2, No. 1 in the New Hampshire Orthopaedic Center/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) while Sean McGarry had three goals and three assists. Drew Redfern added three goals and two assists and Cam Hayden also scored three times before aggrivating an injury late in the first quarter.

Hudson Schmitt added a goal and two assists while Isaac Stutz had two goals, Jackson Warren added a goal and Tyler McLeod had an assist and led the defense, along with goalie Jonah Feliciano (11 saves).

“It was good, but then we also could have cleaned it up a lot more,” Bishop Guertin coach Brian Cameron said of the performance. “We talked a lot about how we wanted to defend them, and watching the film, they’re always firing different things.

“We threw a lot of different things at them. I think we threw four or five different defenses,, played pretty aggressive. Bennett (Matthews) and (Bryce) D’Urso are the two you account for and they’ve got a lot of younger players who are coming into their own, so our game plan was based around that.”

Matthews and freshman Dax Bekar had a goal and an assist apiece, as both scored in the first quarter for the Bulldogs (8-2, No. 3) to make it a 5-2 Bishop Guertin lead after one. But the Cardinals put up five goals in the second quarter to take a 10-2 lead and evantually put the game into running time early in the fourth quarter.

“We were hoping to compete for four quarters,” Bedford coach Steve Gaudreau said. “We certainly didn’t do that. Hats off to them. There’s certain things that we needed to have happen for us to compete a little bit better. We just didn’t do that. We didn’t take care of the ball, didn’t win enough possessions.”

While Bishop Guertin had a slight edge on faceoffs, with Hugh Roark helping the Cardinals win 12 of 21, many of Bedford's win were followed by a turnover. The Bulldogs had 16 giveaways throughout the game, while Bishop Guertin had just eight.

King put the Cardinals on the board just 48 seconds into the game, but Matthews tied it 1-1 with 9:39 left in the opening quarter. Hayden gave Bishop Guertin the lead for good with his first goal less than two minutes later, and it stayed 2-1 until the senior scored back-to-back goals just 50 seconds apart.

But moments later, after a save by Bedford's Ethan Conn, Hayden came up hobbled after chasing down the shot, appearing to aggrviate an injury that had kept him out since a game at Lincoln-Sudbury on April 22.

“He’s been dealing with a lower body injury,” Cameron said. “He’s been practicing and we felt like he was good. We’ll take our time with it, but obviously, it’s a huge loss. We need him healthy for us to be at our best.”

McGarry and Bekar traded goals before the end of the quarter to make it 5-2, but the Cardinals took control to start the second quarter. McGarry and Redfern scored 47 seconds apart to make it 7-2, and after a save by Feliciano, Bishop Guertin was able to get out in transition, leading to a goal by King to make it 8-2.

“They’re a loaded team that’s hard to guard and they played better than us,” Gaudreau said. “That’s it. Not many teams can afford to have their top guy go out and clearly they rallied around it.”

Conn did what he could the rest of the way and finished with 19 saves.

“Ethan always seems to play his best games versus us, and he did it again,” Cameron said. “He played a really good game.”

Bishop Guertin returns to action at 4 p.m. Friday against Nashua North, and then both teams have tough out-of-state road trips coming up on Saturday. Bedford will play at 1 p.m. at Longmeadow (Mass.), while the Cardinals head to UMass-Amherst, where they will face Staples, of Westport, Conn., at 1 p.m.
