The Nashua High School North football team needed a win over Concord last week in more ways than one.

Sure it was good for the Titans to snap a two-game skid, but the way North took care of business on both sides of the football was what had coach Jason Robie pleased.

“I think it was important from the standpoint of talking about your identity,” he said. “You hear a lot of people giving their opinion on who you are. Sometimes you start to believe what you read. It was important to have a solid game last week.

"It was important to get back to Titan defense, where we just do our job and do it as fast as we can. We had a simple game plan going in and we executed that game plan. We flew around to the football. I think the kids needed that, for a confidence builder, that we can play well when we want to.”

Having confidence is just what the Titans were looking for going into this week’s contest against Manchester Memorial. The teams kick off at 7 p.m. Friday night in Manchester.

A dark horse pick to make the playoffs this year, Memorial opened the season with non-division wins over Milford and Manchester West. But losses to Salem and Nashua South followed, and the Crusaders were suddenly 0-2 in Division I.

Memorial won two in a row before last week’s 14-7 loss to Manchester Central, a loss that opened plenty of eyes, especially those at North.

“They are very, very dangerous,” Robie said. “Defensively they are solid and they are physical and they fly to the football. I think they’re not giving up the big play and they’re a lot more physical than they have been in the past. When they do make mistakes, they’re good enough to make up for it with their athleticism.”

While the defensive side is where he believes the Crusaders have improved the most, it’s the Memorial offensive that Robie believes can do that most damage.

“They can hurt you in a number of different ways,” he said. “They can run the ball. Their quarterback (Cody Dalton) is very good. He looks like Houdini out there, making something out of nothing.

“I saw one where there was a broken play and he turns it into a big gain just by making moves himself. They have a very good passing game as well. They are a true spread team, where they spread the field and make you cover sideline to sideline and vertically, which opens the running game.”

Before last week, North’s defense had been shaky, surrendering 105 points to Salem and South. But the Titans’ first unit held Concord scoreless, as the Crimson Tide’s only points before the fourth quarter came on an interception return.

“We need to play a good football game if we want to win,” Robie said. “We focused this week in all three phases because we have to counter their three phases. Something is going to give and hopefully we’ve covered our bases.”
