CONCORD - Colby Nyhan knew that the Concord High School football team needed the offense to put together a good drive in the fourth quarter of Thursday night's 21-12 win over Manchester Memorial.

After the Crimson Tide's first two possessions of the second half ended with a punt and an interception, and the Crusaders had turned their ensuing possessions into points, Concord needed to do something when it got the ball back.

Concord had led 14-0 at halftime, but was now up just two points with 7:39 remaining and the ball on its own 34-yard line.

"We needed to chew the clock," Nyhan said. "Their offense was moving pretty well, give them credit for that. We were making mistakes and that couldn’t happen."

On first down, Concord's senior quarterback connected with Brett Tuttle for a 12-yard completion and a first down. After two runs by Colin Savard gained 5 yards, Memorial was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty, giving the Crimson Tide a first down at the Crusaders' 34.

Nyhan picked up another first down with a sneak on third-and-1, but just a few plays later, Concord faced fourth-and-9 at Memorial's 23.

"We really needed it," Concord coach Jim Corkum said. "We wanted to melt some clock, but we also wanted to put some points on the board. When we got down to the red zone and they had us on that fourth down, we thought, all right three points only puts us up five.

"They’re going to try to score a touchdown, they’re not going for field goals. We thought it was important to try to get six there. On that fourth down, we figured we’ll pin them deep even if we don’t get this."

The play was designed for Nyhan to roll to his right and he found Angelino Rodriguez open for a 15-yard gain and a first-and-goal at Memorial's 8\. Two plays later, the Crimson Tide ran the same play, but this time Nyhan didn't like what he saw.

"It was a designed rollout with a pass to the right," he said. "I didn’t like it. I saw a lane and took off and it was there. I’m glad for that."

Nyhan ran in from 6 yards out and then kicked the extra point to put Concord up nine points, making a two-possession game with just 3:03 remaining.

"Mr. Everything, he does it all," Corkum said of Nyhan. "I’m going to jinx him, but I don’t think he’s missed an extra point all year. We were able to get the first down and then punch it in. I thought that was huge. That put us up two scores and was the difference in the game."

Memorial stormed down the field once it got the ball back, moving to Concord's 11-yard line thanks to a 30-yard completion from Collin Beaulieu to Joel Gomez and a 24-yard run by Beaulieu.

But on the next play, Beaulieu was picked off by Concord's Sawyer McCready with 2:01 left and the Crimson Tide ran out the clock.

"I think going up against a team, watching their scores, they’ve been in a lot of tight games and been able to pull those out," Corkum said of Memorial. "They weren’t panicking when they were down two scores. They knew they could come back and keep it close, and credit to them, they did. This is a team that’s not going to give up and you’ve got to be ready to go four quarters."
