There aren't many things that are kept secret from Gary Bishop.

The Bishop Guertin High School boys hockey coach usually finds out everything he needs to know about, and according to the coach, that usually comes from his daughter.

But on Monday, no one spoiled the surprise the school administration had planned for Bishop, who is in his 25th year coaching the Cardinals and has compiled a record of 338-127-14\. Before the game against Concord, Bishop Guertin honored its longtime coach for his years of service with a rocking chair, as it does for anyone associated with the school for a quarter of a century.

"My daughter (Kristen) usually tells me everything and she didn't say anything about it," Bishop said. "She usually tells me all the secrets ahead of time, and she didn't tell me this one, the one I would have liked to have known. Usually, she'll tell me what people are buying me for Christmas."

It was likely no mistake that Bishop Guertin's opponent for the game was the Crimson Tide. During Bishop's tenure, the teams have had several key meetings, including five times in the Division I title game.

The Cardinals won the most recent championship matchup, a 4-1 win in 2015\. Concord won in 1996, 1997 and 1999 while Bishop Guertin returned the favor in 2000.

"I was kind of glad that it was against Concord when they did it because we've had so many great games over the years, and he's such a great guy," Concord coach Duncan Walsh said. "I'm glad I was here to witness it.

"We've got them again at home (on Feb. 25). That's the way it always was and how it should be. It was a good, hard-fought game (between) two pretty good teams."

Both teams appear to be among several teams chasing Bedford, the defending division champions, but might be closer than anyone else.

Concord lost to the Bulldogs by a goal on Dec. 14, while the Cardinals tied Bedford a week later. The Bulldogs followed up their Manchester Monarch Christmas Hockey Classic tournament win with an 8-0 victory over previously-undefeated Londonderry on Monday.

"You've got to play hard and play smart every night," Walsh said. "We had a tough tournament where we only scored three goals in three games. Anyone is certainly capable of beating anybody. Bedford is probably the top team, but it's still early. We've got a long way to go."
