BEDFORD - The new pod-based tournament format matched up two of the best high school teams in Division I and they did not disappoint.

Bedford and Concord played a thrilling 60 minutes, and Kaitlyn Mckinnon’s second-quarter goal was all the Crimson Tide needed to pick up a 1-0 win and advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal against Manchester Central-West.

The win was Concord’s third over Bedford in less than two weeks. The Crimson Tide picked up wins of 2-0 and 3-1 to close out the regular season last week.

“Honestly, we were pretty lucky this week,” Concord coach Andrew Briers said. “Bedford outclassed us (Wednesday). We were lucky to get that breakaway goal. I don’t mind playing teams three times. The kids get to play; that’s the most important thing. It’s been one of the highlights, just being able to play hockey.”

The lone goal came off a turnover midway through the second quarter. Mckinnon took a pass from a teammate and went in one-on-one with the keeper and slapped home a shot with pace.

The Crimson Tide (9-0-1) were able to generate a few chances in the fourth quarter, but other than the goal, it was Bedford that controlled the play throughout.

The Bulldogs amassed 10 penalty corners throughout the game but couldn’t convert. Junior keeper Rhyden Wheldon had four saves for the Crimson Tide, and the defensive unit found a way to keep Bedford at bay.

Senior Maria Armaganian was a stalwart throughout on both ends for Concord. She was a key piece in defending the penalty corners and pushed the ball up through the midfield all game.

“She’s been a terrific player for four years,” Briers said. “She’s always been a gritty player, and she’s added certain skills. She knows where to be. She knows how to talk to the other players as well. She definitely exhibited her talents (Wednesday).”

The win ends Bedford’s season with a 6-4 record, but a completed season is a goal in itself in 2020\. The Bulldogs seem primed for the future, with nearly three quarters of the roster returning next season.

Bulldogs coach Anneke McStowe said she was proud of her team and grateful to have had a chance to coach this season.

“We tried to really do what we needed to do on the field to get things done,” McStowe said. “That being said, this is the best game they’ve played all season, and that’s all I could ask for. I always wanted them to improve. They should be proud of the work they’ve done all season. They brought it.”
