TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. - The top two teams in the Division I standings met on the ice Wednesday night.

The Concord High School boys hockey team was ready to go from the opening faceoff. Bishop Guertin was not.

The Crimson Tide scored 17 seconds into the game, went up two goals less than five minutes in, and kept the Cardinals on their heels for most of the night in a 5-1 win at Skate 3.

Tyler Coskren finished with two goals and an assist, including a goal on Concord's second shot of the game, and Ryan Philbrick scored a power play goal to give the Tide (10-0) a 2-0 lead at the 4:47 mark of the first.

"That obviously helps when you score 13 seconds in on the road," Concord coach Duncan Walsh said. "BG-Concord is always a huge game. They’re coming off a big win over Arlington Catholic, so that gave us a boost definitely."

Colin O'Brien and Brooks Craigue also had a goal a piece while Matthew Hauschild added two assists. Noah Drew, Anders Norton and Ryan Doherty each chipped in with an assist.

The lone goal for Bishop Guertin (7-2) came from Declan Wilkie, with an assist going to Sean Kelley, and came 2:50 after Concord had taken a 3-0 lead early in the second period. That score seemed to wake the Cardinals up, but they were unable to capitalize further on some chances in the middle frame.

"It took them a little while to bounce back," Bishop Guertin coach Gary Bishop said. "They’re frustrated. They're kids, they see a bad goal like that early in the game and everybody gets deflated. You’re up, you’re ready to go, and boom, the puck is in your net. They fought back and played well."

The goal to open the game came after a shot by Hauschild hit the post and bounced right to Coskren, who fired a shot past Cardinals goalie Chris Sullivan. Philbrick made it 2-0 with 10:13 left in the opening period when his blast from the blue line made it through traffic.

"I thought we kept playing good," Walsh said. "We were trying to get it to 3-0 and we had another power play, and we’re pretty good on the power play, but we didn’t do anything with that one. I was happy with at the end of the first.

"I thought the second period, halfway through and on, they kind of took it to us. They got the goal, had a little momentum, some pushback, so I was happy our guys played hard."

Concord played a little too hard at the end of the period, as Hauschild was called for a cross check with seven seconds left, but the Tide was able to kill off the penalty to start the third.

The Cardinals took back-to-back penalties after that, and Concord stretched the lead to 4-1 on the second, as Coskren scored his second of the game with 7:39 remaining. The Tide finished 2 of 4 on the power play, while the Cardinals were 0 for 3.

"Their power play worked and ours didn’t," Bishop said. "They outworked us from the opening faceoff to the last faceoff. You make a little mistake and they capitalize on it."
