CONCORD - When the Concord High School boys hockey team has won this season, it has done so by lighting up the scoreboard.

The Crimson Tide continued that trend en route to a 9-1 triumph over Manchester Memorial Wednesday night at Everett Arena.

Concord (7-1) tallied three goals in the first period and another four in the second frame to take a 7-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Crimson Tide have outscored their opponents 46-13 over its seven victories this season. Concord coach Dunc Walsh noted his team has some skilled forwards but said its scoring output might also be a product of its schedule to this point.

“We’ve got a couple good offensive players but I mean we still haven’t played the meat of our schedule,” Walsh said. “When we get to February, things could change a little.”

Freshman Mike Stoddard recorded two goals and two assists while junior Shane Riley added two goals of his own for the Crimson Tide.

A strong Concord forecheck and four Memorial penalties kept the Crusaders (2-7) from mustering much offense. The Crimson Tide outshot Memorial, 27-7, over the opening 30 minutes and 31-9 overall.

“They do a lot of things right,” Memorial coach Mark Putney said of the Crimson Tide. “They’re aggressive on the puck and they move the puck very well. ... It got us running around a little bit and then that just opens up more space for them.”

Concord junior Andrew Paquette opened the scoring at the 4:06 mark when he went top shelf on Memorial goaltender Chuck Degust while the Crimson Tide were on the power play. Devin Philbrick scored 1:09 after Paquette’s tally to double Concord’s advantage.

Stoddard gave Concord a three-goal lead when he skated into the Crusaders zone and put the puck by Degust (22 saves) with 5:50 remaining in the opening period.

Stoddard netted his second of the game and teammates Riley, Alex Forward and Derek Kelleher also scored in the middle frame. Stoddard’s second tally gave Concord a 6-0 lead at the 7:12 mark of the second period. Riley’s first goal, which gave Concord a seven-goal advantage, came with 7.1 seconds left in the frame during a five-on-three Crimson Tide advantage.

Riley and Jake Sullivan each found the back of the Memorial net over the final 15 minutes.

Walsh was pleased to see some players who are not regulars on the scoresheet contribute offensively in the win.

“We can’t rely on one line and it just gives those guys confidence - the guys that don’t generally score,” Walsh said. “You just want those guys to develop and this gives them a good chance to be able to go out there and show what they can do.”

Memorial’s lone goal came on the power play with 5:44 remaining when Patrick Goren scored off assists from linemates Rickie Beauparlant and Jared Chandonnet.

Memorial was largely limited to creating scoring chances on counter rushes. It's best chance to get on the scoreboard over the first two periods came 4:05 into the middle frame when captain Eric Langley hit the post on a Crusaders counter rush.

Spencer Burgess and Alex Reynolds made a combined eight saves for Concord.

“It was good for us to be able to use everybody and everybody contributed - all four lines,” Walsh said. “In a game like that, all I’m looking for is just keep moving the puck around and find the open guy, don’t get individual.”
