With time running out, Hodgson drove to the basket and was fouled with one second left in regulation. On the line for two shots, the Conant senior needed to make one free throw to avoid overtime and he did, hitting the first. Hodgson missed the second, but there was no time for Pelham to do anything with the rebound, and the Orioles came away with a 43-42 win over the Pythons in Division III action. It's Pelham's first loss in D3 and the team's first defeat at the hands of an instate opponent since March of 2014. It's also the first time Conant has beaten Pelham in five tries over the last two seasons. "This is a very big win for us since we lost to them four times before this, including last year," Hodgson said. "We knew we had to come in here and play our hardest." Josh DeGrenier led the Orioles (7-1) with 14 points and Brandon Ford added seven as six different Conant players scored at least four points. But more importantly to Conant coach Eric Saucier was the team's defense, including the work Hodgson did on Brown. "We knew it was going to take defense," Saucier said. "I'm proud of how hard they played defensively. Simeon's job was not to score. It was to, well, you can't stop Keith Brown. You can only contain him as much as you can and I thought Simeon did a great job. The job the other guys did to help, to hold Pelham to 42 points, I'll take it every time." Pelham (7-1) got 25 points from Brown and Cam DeLoreto added eight points, but the rest of the team combined for just nine points. When the team's met on Dec. 18, the Pythons were able to get contributions from more players. "The first time around, other guys stepped up and made shots," Pelham coach Matt Regan said. "It tells us that we're not invincible and we have things to work on. I had been thinking it was going to happen at some point, the way we've been playing. We're relying too much on one guy. Now we've got to figure it out." Pelham jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but Conant was able to answer with 14-2 run that put the Orioles up 16-9 with 1:52 left in the first quarter. That lead grew to 12 points in the second quarter before the Pythons closed the half on a 10-2 run to cut Conant's lead to 27-23 at the break. "We lost the game in the first quarter," Regan said. "We didn't show up to play. To give up 18 points (in the first quarter) was definitely not very good. We played hard, but just not smart. It was just mistakes on offensive rebounds and hustle plays. That's just not doing your job." A 3-pointer by Brown to open the third made it a one-point game, but although the Pythons never trailed by more than four points in the quarter, they couldn't get any closer. Conant still led 38-36 going into the fourth, but Brown tied the game with a jumper 25 seconds into the quarter. After an Orioles miss at the other end, Pelham had a chance to take its first lead since early in the game, but rushed a shot and Conant grabbed the rebound. James Record was fouled at the other end and made both free throws, giving the Orioles the lead again. "They're going to make their runs and Keith is going to make his shots, we just have to stay within ourselves and stick to the game plan," Saucier said. "I thought the guys did a great job of that. We kept our heads and we stuck together." DeLoreto tied the game at 40 with a layup with 4:38 remaining, but Conant answered right away with a basket by DeGrenier to go back ahead. After taking a timeout with 2:09 left, the Orioles started to bleed the clock. Pelham tried to foul, but instead, got the ball back on a held ball with 1:47 to play. Moments later, Brown tied the game with a jumper, and after a missed shot by Conant, the Pythons got the ball back with under a minute to play. Regan called a timeout with 49.8 seconds to go, but Pelham turned the ball over, as Ford stepped in front of a pass to Brown at the top of the key. Conant took a timeout with 18.6 remaining, and tried to set up a last-second shot. "What we wanted to do was run Simeon off the double (screen) and then CJ (Bilodeau) would back screen for Brandon (Ford) in the post," Saucier said. "CJ didn't do the second screen, so we adjusted and the guys did what they needed to do. It was a broken play, but it worked well." Hodgson drove to the basket as time ticked away, and appeared to be fouled as the final buzzer sounded. After the officials conferred, one second was put back on the clock and Hodgson went to the line. "I really wasn't thinking about it too much," he said. "Every day we practice it. We shoot 20 or 30 free throws, so it was kind of routine for me. I just went through the motions and made the shot."
