BEDFORD - Once the celebration died down a little bit, Reilly Collins was by himself, walking around the field at Bedford High School, even taking a seat on the bench for a moment.

The Portsmouth High School senior looked around, reflecting on his career with the Clippers that had just come to an end in the most memorable way.

Scoreless and down five goals more than halfway through the third quarter, Portsmouth stormed back over the final 16 minutes of regulation to send Saturday's Division II championship game against Derryfield to overtime.

After each team had a crack at putting the game away, the Clippers got the ball back and it eventually ended up with Collins.

"I missed a shot and Sawyer (Bouvier) hustled the ball out," Collins said. "That was a crucial play. They had been running that zone all day, and there’s a little spot (open on the wing), and I had a step on my guy. I caught it and I thought ‘might as well shoot it.’ It fell."

Collins found the back of the net with 29.9 seconds remaining in overtime to complete the comeback for the No. 6 Clippers, as they won their second D2 title in a row - and fourth in five years - with 6-5 win over the top-seeded Cougars.

"This moment is so surreal to me," Collins said. "I feel like I’ve been envisioning this my whole life. I just needed to take a second and try to soak it in, because I want to remember this moment for the rest of my life."

The Portsmouth senior finished with two goals and an assist while Sam Biddle had a goal and an assist while also winning 10 of 14 faceoffs. Bouvier capitalized on a failed clear by the Cougars with 40 seconds left to tie the game and eventually force overtime, while Henry Purcell and Ben Purcell had a goal apiece.

Derryfield (19-1) got two goals and two assists from RJ Proulx and two goals and an assist from Brady Doldo. Emerson Stover also scored and Liam England made 14 saves to help keep the Clippers scoreless for the first 32 minutes of the game.

But after making a save with about a minute left and the Cougars up by one, England's pass sailed over the head of Caleb May and was scooped up by Collins, who found Bouvier streaking to the crease for the tying goal.

"He's beating himself up right now, but I told (England), we wouldn’t be here without you," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "We wouldn’t have been in that situation without him. He made some great saves and lucky for him, he’s a sophomore, so he’s got time to grow and learn from that."

The Cougars were able to keep the game at their pace in the first half, going up 1-0 when Proulx made a behind-the-back feed to Doldo with 5:17 left in the opening quarter. The pair added a goal apiece in the second quarter to give Derryfield a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Stover and Proulx scored a minute apart in the third quarter for a 5-0 lead with 6:20 remaining in the frame.

Portsmouth increased its defensive pressure from there, doubling Derryfield just about every time the Cougars got close to the box.

"We had to," Portsmouth coach Chad Vischer said. "It was all out of necessity. If we lose by 10 or we lose by one, it doesn’t matter. A loss is a loss in the championship. We were pressing out, we were making drastic changes, and it worked."

The Clippers didn't allow a goal over the final 22 minutes of the game. Biddle finally got them on the board with 3:07 remaining in the third, but it was still a 5-1 Derryfield lead going into the fourth.

"I did think we’ve got to just score one to get the confidence going," Vischer said. "We were winning faceoffs. That was massive. I thought we can’t do make-it, take-it, but we can kind of do that."

Henry Purcell and Ben Purcell scored 1:22 apart to make it 5-3 with 5:54 remaining, and Collins scored with 2:40 left to cut the lead to one.

Portsmouth took a timeout with 1:30 to play, but England saved a shot from Biddle before the turnover and Bouvier's tying goal.

"I was pretty close to calling a timeout there," Hettler said. "He was so wide open though, I didn’t think I needed to. In hindsight, you think that, but there’s no telling, we may not have cleared the ball. There was still a minute left in the game. Credit to them, they made a play when they needed to play."
